Hindu Spiritual Body Demands CBI Probe Into Kerala Temple Gold Thefts
Margadarsaka Mandalam, a prominent organization of Hindu spiritual leaders in Kerala, has made a strong demand. They want the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over the probe into the theft of gold from Sabarimala and other temples managed by devaswom boards.
Meeting with Union Home Minister
Swami Chidanandapuri, the state president of Mandalam, revealed that the organization discussed this critical matter with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The spiritual leaders expressed deep concerns about the ongoing investigations.
Chidanandapuri stated that justice can only be ensured through a central agency investigation. He pointed to serious suspicions that the stolen gold ornaments and other valuable items might have been smuggled abroad. The devaswom board itself and individuals connected to the state government are under suspicion, making a local probe inadequate.
Call for Exemplary Punishment
The spiritual head emphasized that all offenders must face severe consequences. He declared that whoever is responsible should receive exemplary punishment. This applies equally to ministers and temple priests, known as tanthris.
At the same time, Chidanandapuri cautioned against making anyone a scapegoat in this sensitive case. He stressed the importance of a fair and thorough investigation that identifies the real culprits.
Concerns Over Tanthri's Arrest
Chidanandapuri expressed specific worries about how authorities handled the arrest of a temple priest. He noted a troubling difference in treatment between the tanthri and other individuals questioned in connection with the thefts.
Former devaswom minister Kadakampally Surendran and former Travancore Devaswom Board member K P Shankardas received discreet questioning. In contrast, the tanthri faced public interrogation. This disparity raised red flags for the spiritual organization.
The Mandalam president suggested possible ulterior motives behind the priest's arrest. He warned that if the arrest aimed to protect political leaders or divert attention from thefts at other temples, it must face strong opposition. The spiritual body remains vigilant about these developments.
