Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has not denied reports that he is pushing hard for a rotational deal on the BMC mayor's position with the BJP. On Sunday, Shinde made a clear statement. He said, "The mayor's post will be with Mahayuti." This comment comes as political circles buzz with speculation about his demands.
Shinde's Strategic Position in BMC
The recent BMC election results give Shinde significant leverage. The BJP secured 89 seats, while Shiv Sena under Shinde won 29 seats. To reach the majority mark of 114, the BJP requires Shinde's support. This situation presents a golden opportunity for Shinde. He can now press for key posts, including the mayor and the chairman of the standing committee.
The standing committee holds crucial financial powers in the BMC, which is India's wealthiest municipal corporation. Shinde's ability to influence these appointments could shape Mumbai's civic governance for years to come.
Performance and Poaching Concerns
However, Shinde's performance in the polls fell short compared to Shiv Sena (UBT), which captured 65 seats. This weaker showing has led to heightened political maneuvering. On Saturday, Shinde moved all 29 of his corporators to a hotel in Bandra. The opposition quickly accused him of fearing poaching attempts by Shiv Sena (UBT).
Shinde dismissed these charges outright. He stated, "Shiv Sena does not get scared. It scares others." His firm response aimed to project strength and unity within his faction.
Meeting with Corporators and Electoral Gains
On Sunday evening, Shinde visited the hotel to meet and address his corporators. He emphasized their responsibilities, saying, "I told them that they have been given this opportunity because people voted for development. They should keep in touch with their wards." This directive underscores his focus on grassroots connectivity and public service.
Shinde also highlighted the success of his party's strategies. He noted that 19 of the 29 elected corporators are women. He credited the Ladki Bahin scheme for this achievement, saying it has worked well in both assembly and municipal corporation elections. Additionally, he revealed that his party has won over 400 posts across 29 municipal corporations, showcasing broader electoral gains beyond Mumbai.
The political landscape in Mumbai remains tense as alliance talks continue. Shinde's moves will be closely watched in the coming days, with the BMC mayor's post hanging in the balance.
