The Madurai Corporation has taken a major step to address the city's crumbling road network by sanctioning a substantial Rs 100 crore under the Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP). This fund is specifically earmarked for repairing roads that have been severely damaged due to a combination of heavy rains and extensive underground utility work related to sewage and drinking water lines.
Focus on High-Impact Areas and Long-Overdue Repairs
According to civic officials, the repair drive will concentrate on roads that have become unmotorable, particularly those impacted by infrastructure projects and those laid over five years ago. The situation has been especially dire around prominent locations. Kumaran, an auto-rickshaw driver, highlighted the difficulties faced by residents and tourists alike, stating that roads near the Vaigai river and the Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple were badly affected for many days following utility work.
While some critical repairs, such as those on Palace Road and main roads encircling the Meenakshi temple, have already been completed, many others await attention. A corporation official confirmed that under the current phase, New Mahalipatti Road, New Ramnad Road, and Ismailpuram 12th Street have been selected for repair. The official added that in certain zones, complete relaying is necessary, and funds have been allocated accordingly.
Residents Voice Concerns Over Inner Roads and Rain Damage
Despite progress on major arteries, residents point out that the problem persists in smaller, inner streets. D Ravikumar, a resident of Villapuram, acknowledged the repair of main roads but stressed that numerous interior roads remain in poor condition. He further noted that damage from rains a few months ago has yet to be addressed in many parts of the city.
Strict Deadline Set for Project Completion
The Madurai Corporation has set a clear timeline for this extensive repair work. Officials have announced that the scheduled road repairs under this project are expected to be completed by mid-February. Following this, other identified roads will also be patched up to improve overall connectivity and commuting experience across Madurai.
