Telangana's Historic Legislative Council Building Reopens After Renovation
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy inaugurated the renovated Telangana legislative council building on Sunday, marking a significant step in preserving the state's heritage. This structure, dating back to the Nizam era, has been restored to host the upcoming budget session of the council, scheduled to commence on March 16.
Unified Campus Vision and Budget Session Details
The government revived the council building to ensure that assembly and council sessions are conducted on a single, unified campus, aligning with the Congress government's vision. Council chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy, speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, ministers, and senior officials attended the inauguration event. The budget session of the assembly will begin with the governor addressing the joint session of the legislature.
The state budget is likely to be presented on March 20; however, there could be a change in the date if Eid ul fitr falls on that day. This flexibility underscores the government's consideration of cultural and religious events in its legislative planning.
Heritage Restoration and Collaborative Efforts
Originally called the Town Hall, this Nizam-era building now houses the Telangana legislative council. The Revanth government undertook the renovation of this heritage structure, continuing the Congress government's commitment to having both legislative bodies within a unified campus. The restoration was carried out in collaboration with the Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC), ensuring that the architectural integrity and historical significance of the building were preserved.
Since 2018, the legislative council had conducted its proceedings from the council hall within the Jubilee Hall premises, adjacent to the assembly. With the completion of the renovation, council sessions will now be held in the restored building, as confirmed by the council chairman.
Future Plans for Legislative Infrastructure
The Congress government plans to use the existing Jubilee Hall for official events, optimizing the use of state resources. Additionally, there are proposals to construct a new central hall for joint sessions of both houses, which would further enhance the functionality and efficiency of the legislative campus. This move aims to streamline governmental operations and provide a modernized space for critical parliamentary activities.
The inauguration of the renovated building not only revitalizes a piece of Telangana's history but also sets the stage for more cohesive and integrated legislative processes in the future.
