Ranchi's Doranda-Hinoo Belt Grapples with Traffic, Water Woes Amid Rapid Growth
Residents of ward numbers 48 and 49 in the Doranda and Hinoo areas under the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) are facing a multitude of persistent issues that have severely impacted their quality of life. According to local accounts, relentless traffic congestion and escalating noise pollution have transformed daily routines into a constant struggle. These problems are compounded by underdeveloped inner lanes, acute water shortages, and significant security concerns, creating a challenging living environment.
Population and Commercial Expansion
Ward 49 is home to 19,129 residents, while Ward 48 houses 15,626 people. Both areas have experienced rapid commercial growth along major thoroughfares. In Ward 49, key stretches include Saket Nagar Road, Airport Road, and Hinoo Chowk. Ward 48 features Doranda Main Road, Rahmat Colony Masjid Road, and Kusai Chowk. Locals report that the intense vehicular pressure on these primary corridors often spills over into residential lanes, many of which remain narrow and poorly maintained, unable to handle the increased load.
Traffic and Noise Pollution Concerns
Neha Sinha, a resident of Saket Nagar Road, highlighted the severe traffic issues. "From morning until late evening, Airport Road and Hinoo Chowk are perpetually jam-packed. The continuous, ear-shattering honking of vehicles has become a routine part of our lives," she stated. "The larger problem arises when traffic is diverted into the inner lanes. These roads are broken and ill-equipped to manage such a heavy vehicle load, exacerbating the congestion and damage."
Water Crisis and Infrastructure Deficiencies
In Rahmat Colony, residents pointed to a persistent water crisis as a major concern. Mohammed Arif of Masjid Road explained, "Water supply is highly irregular, especially during the summer months. We frequently depend on tankers several times a week. Despite being located in a prime locality, basic services like consistent water delivery remain unreliable and inconsistent."
Safety Issues on Doranda Main Road
Deepak Das, a street vendor on Doranda Main Road, raised alarms about safety risks. "Doranda Main Road has become extremely hazardous, particularly during college hours. With students from Doranda College crossing amid speeding vehicles and constant traffic jams, even a short walk feels unsafe," he said. "There are no proper pedestrian crossings or traffic personnel deployed during peak hours to manage the situation, leaving residents vulnerable to accidents."
Calls for Coordinated Solutions
Residents emphasize that without coordinated measures, the Doranda–Hinoo belt will continue to suffer under unplanned urban pressure. Key recommendations include:
- Regulated traffic flow to reduce congestion
- Designated parking areas to alleviate street clutter
- Pedestrian safety steps near educational institutes
- Improved inner-lane infrastructure for better accessibility
- Assured water supply to address the persistent crisis
Despite being one of Ranchi's busiest and most commercially vibrant corridors, the lack of these essential interventions threatens to undermine the livability and safety of these densely populated wards under the Ranchi Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction.
