Rahuri Bypoll in Ahilyanagar Takes Dramatic Political Turn

The political landscape of the Rahuri bypoll in Ahilyanagar district has been dramatically reshaped by strategic maneuvers and personal rivalries, creating a multi-cornered contest with significant implications for Maharashtra politics.

BJP's Strategic Intervention Alters Race Dynamics

In a significant development, the Bharatiya Janata Party reportedly succeeded in persuading Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar)'s initial frontrunner and former minister Prajakt Tanpure not to enter the electoral fray. This strategic intervention occurred after BJP state president Ravindra Chavan visited Rahuri specifically to hold talks with Tanpure.

Following a crucial meeting and subsequent phone conversation with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Tanpure announced his withdrawal from the contest. "My priority has always been the overall development of Rahuri taluka, resolving land acquisition issues and safeguarding the local cooperative sugar factory," Tanpure explained. "The Chief Minister has assured me these concerns will be addressed."

Swift Response from NCP(SP) Leadership

Anticipating this possibility, the NCP(SP) leadership had already kept Govind Mokate on standby as an alternative candidate. A former zilla parishad member with a long-standing political presence in the region, Mokate formally entered the race by filing his nomination alongside NCP(SP) district president Sandeep Varpe.

Political analysts note that the contest has now assumed a deeply personal dimension, as Mokate's rivalry with the Kardile family dates back to the 2017 Pangarmal hooch tragedy that claimed nine lives. Mokate and his daughter were named in the case, allegations he maintains resulted from a politically motivated conspiracy hatched by his opponents.

Kardile Legacy Faces Direct Challenge

On Monday, Akshay Kardile, son of the late BJP MLA Shivaji Kardile whose demise left the seat vacant, filed his nomination amid an overwhelming show of strength. He was accompanied by prominent BJP leaders including state president Ravindra Chavan, MLC Ram Shinde, and guardian minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil.

Mokate, previously associated with Shiv Sena (UBT), is now contesting under the NCP(SP) banner in what represents a direct challenge to the Kardile political legacy in the region.

Internal Discord Across Political Alliances

Despite strategic calculations by major parties, the election is witnessing significant internal discord across political formations. Ravi More, western Maharashtra president of the Shetkari Sena (Shiv Sena), has rebelled against the alliance and filed his nomination as an independent candidate.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition also appears divided, with Congress's Suryabhan Lambe and Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Raosaheb Khevre entering the race, the latter contesting as an independent candidate. Adding another layer to this multi-cornered contest, the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi has fielded Balasaheb Jadhav as their candidate.

Complex Electoral Landscape Emerges

The Rahuri bypoll has transformed into a complex electoral battleground featuring:

  • A direct contest between BJP's Akshay Kardile and NCP(SP)'s Govind Mokate
  • Multiple independent candidates from various political backgrounds
  • Representation from smaller regional parties
  • Personal rivalries intersecting with broader political alliances

This development represents a significant test for political strategies in Maharashtra, with implications that extend beyond this single bypoll to broader alliance dynamics and electoral calculations in the state.
