Punjab Minister Directs Transport Department to Clear Backlog in Driving Licences and Registration Certificates
In a decisive move to address administrative delays, Punjab Finance and Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has issued strict directives to the state's transport department to clear the significant backlog in the issuance of driving licences (DLs) and registration certificates (RCs). The announcement came following a comprehensive review meeting held on Wednesday, where the minister emphasized the urgency of resolving these pending applications to alleviate citizen inconvenience.
Strict Action on Pending Applications
During the meeting, Minister Cheema expressed serious concern over the high number of applications stuck at various verification and approval stages. "I have taken strict cognisance of the total applications currently pending and directed officials to clear the pendency at the earliest," he stated. To ensure accountability and streamline the process, the department is actively compiling detailed data on all pending applications, including specific reasons for delays. This data-driven approach aims to identify bottlenecks and enforce corrective measures to expedite clearance.
Focus on Faceless and Contactless Services
The review also covered the status of driving licence services offered through faceless and contactless modes, which have been implemented to enhance efficiency and reduce physical interactions. Cheema instructed officials to meticulously track applications pending under these categories to guarantee their timely disposal, highlighting the government's commitment to leveraging technology for better service delivery. Priority on Printing Backlog and Road Safety

"This must be treated as a top priority, and I have issued firm directions to clear this pendency," he asserted, underscoring the need to eliminate delays in the final issuance stages. Additionally, the meeting included detailed discussions on road safety and transport operations. Efforts are underway to deploy and monitor highway traffic cameras for better traffic management and enhanced road safety across Punjab.
