Pune Civic Polls: 35.5 Lakh Voters to Elect 165 Corporators on Jan 15
Pune Municipal Corporation elections set for January 15

The stage is set for a crucial democratic exercise in Pune as approximately 35.51 lakh eligible voters prepare to elect their new civic representatives. The elections for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will be held on January 15, where voters across 41 wards will choose 165 corporators. This elected general body will be tasked with resolving a multitude of civic challenges plaguing the city for the next five years.

Pressing Civic Issues Await New Corporators

For nearly four years, since the tenure of the previous elected body ended in March 2022, the city has been administered by a civic commissioner. Residents have expressed dissatisfaction with this "makeshift" arrangement, yearning for elected representatives to address long-standing problems. The city has been grappling with a severe lack of good public transport, frequent traffic chaos, and the pathetic condition of roads. Inadequate supply of drinking water, growing piles of garbage, rising pollution levels, and the tardy pace of key infrastructure projects have compounded citizens' woes.

Civic activist Vivek Velankar highlighted that inadequate water supply remains a major unresolved issue, stressing that concrete steps are urgently required. The new general body will need to focus on both immediate relief and long-term sustainable measures for these persistent problems.

Political Landscape and Electoral Dynamics

The electoral battle is heating up with major political alliances firming up their strategies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which recorded a thumping victory in the last 2017 election by winning 97 seats, aims to retain power. It plans to take Shiv Sena along and have a "friendly" fight with its other alliance partner, the Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

On the opposing side, the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) constituents—including the Congress, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT)—have announced a united fight against the BJP. The race for tickets is intense, with aspirants across parties in full preparation mode. The BJP has already completed interviews for hopeful candidates, while the NCP, NCP (SP), and Congress are expected to hold their interviews in the coming days.

A significant factor in this election will be the 21 newly merged areas, which have been incorporated into 10 wards. These areas are going to the polls for the first time and will play a crucial role in sending 40 corporators to the house.

Election Preparations in Full Swing

The State Election Commission announced the poll schedule on Monday, ending a long delay caused by cases pertaining to civic elections and reservations pending in various courts. Prasad Katkar, deputy commissioner and head of PMC's election department, stated that election preparations are in full swing. The administration will finalize plans for accepting nominations and other procedures in the next couple of days.

Various committees will be established to ensure the smooth conduct of the poll, with further details to be released soon. The nearly four-year administrative interregnum is finally set to end, allowing Pune's citizens to directly shape their city's governance for the next half-decade.
