Pune Metro Construction Worsens Nigdi-Chinchwad Highway Condition, Sparking Commuter Outcry
Residents and daily commuters utilizing the crucial Nigdi–Chinchwad segment of the historic Mumbai–Pune highway in Pimpri-Chinchwad are voicing significant distress over the rapidly deteriorating state of the roadway, a direct consequence of the ongoing Metro project activities. The stretch, now riddled with deep potholes and uneven surfaces, has transformed into a hazardous zone, with a noticeable increase in accident reports.
Political Pressure Mounts with Protest Deadline
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has formally intervened, submitting a detailed letter to Shravan Hardikar, who serves as both the Commissioner of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and the in-charge of Maha Metro. The party's communication demands immediate and comprehensive resurfacing work. The MNS has issued a stern warning, threatening to organize a ‘chakka jam’ (road blockade) protest on March 25 if the necessary repairs are not conclusively finished by that date.
Sachin Chikhale, the MNS city president for Pimpri-Chinchwad, emphasized that the road's poor condition is not a new development. "This vital stretch has remained in a state of disrepair for over two years," Chikhale stated. "The contractors assigned to the Metro project have consistently failed to execute timely maintenance. This is not just a highway link; it is a daily route for countless residents."
Commuters Detail Daily Hardships and Safety Risks
The firsthand accounts from local residents paint a grim picture of daily travel. Sarang Dahiwal, a Nigdi resident and regular user of the road, explained that Metro work has already substantially narrowed the carriageway. The situation is exacerbated during evening peak hours by heavy vehicles, including private buses and construction machinery, leading to severe congestion.
"Authorities did attempt some repair work recently, but the quality was abysmal," Dahiwal lamented. "The road remains uneven and filled with dangerous potholes. It's a constant risk."
Another commuter, Arjun Pawar, revealed that many are now opting for longer alternative routes, such as traveling via Akurdi Railway Station, to avoid the perilous stretch. "Nigdi Chowk is a nightmare in the evenings. The poor road condition compounds the existing congestion," Pawar said. He also highlighted that the previous restriction on private luxury buses (allowed only after 10 PM) has been relaxed, permitting them post-5 PM, which further clogs the already narrowed road. Illegally parked autorickshaws add another layer to the traffic chaos.
A Recurring Monsoon Menace and Inadequate Fixes
This is a recurring issue that intensifies annually during the monsoon season. Last year, the road's condition deteriorated so drastically that it prompted protests from political parties and activists. While Metro officials were approached and agreed to conduct repairs, residents assert that only superficial patchwork was performed instead of the needed complete resurfacing, a stopgap measure that has ultimately worsened the underlying problem.
Chikhale issued a dire warning regarding the impending monsoon: "If proper repair work is not undertaken immediately, the road will become utterly non-motorable during the rains. The authorities must treat this as a top priority."
Official Response and Assurance
In response to the growing concerns, Shravan Hardikar, Managing Director of Maha Metro and Additional Commissioner of PCMC, assured that action is being taken. "We have instructed the contractor to complete the repair work on a priority basis," Hardikar stated. He acknowledged the logistical challenges, noting that the issue was discussed with the traffic police department, as repairs will require temporary road closures and traffic diversions. "I will personally follow up with the concerned contractor to ensure the work is expedited. Any issues will be resolved," he added.
The situation underscores a critical infrastructure challenge in Pune, where essential development projects like the Metro are inadvertently creating public safety hazards and severe inconvenience for citizens, now pushing local political groups to the brink of organized protest.
