A political controversy has erupted in Mumbai over a white-coated pathway created for barefoot Jain monks, drawing sharp criticism from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Sandeep Deshpande. Deshpande, who heads the party's city unit, described the move as 'cultural terrorism' and asserted the 'first right' of Marathi people over Mumbai.
MNS Leader's Strong Reaction
'This is a cultural terrorism which should be stopped, or we won't keep quiet till we blacken their faces,' Deshpande warned. He further cautioned against any attempt to assert dominance in the city under the guise of religion, stating that Mumbai has always belonged to the Marathi manoos and will remain so. 'No one should try to assert supremacy over it,' he added.
Background of the Controversy
The controversy began after a white coating was applied to a pathway inside a residential complex to facilitate the movement of Jain monks, who traditionally walk barefoot. The development triggered a political backlash, with Deshpande leading the charge against what he perceives as an infringement on Marathi identity.
Aftermath and Repainting
Following the backlash, officials have since repainted the white line within the housing society, seeking to defuse the tension. The incident has reignited debates over cultural sensitivities and the rights of different communities in Mumbai, a city known for its diverse population.
