PM Modi to Kickstart Bengal Campaign with Cooch Behar Rally on April 5
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address his first political rally in West Bengal since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) declared its candidate list for the crucial 2026 state assembly elections. The rally will take place in Cooch Behar on April 5, marking a significant moment in the party's electoral strategy for the eastern state.
Strategic Campaign Intensification from April 9
The BJP has outlined plans to significantly ramp up its campaign activities across West Bengal starting April 9. This intensified push will commence immediately after the nomination process for the first two phases of the elections is formally completed, allowing the party to deploy its full organizational machinery.
Cooch Behar: A Crucial Battleground with Mixed Results
Cooch Behar holds particular strategic importance for the BJP's electoral calculations in West Bengal. In the 2021 assembly elections, the party demonstrated remarkable strength in this district, securing victory in eight out of nine assembly constituencies. This success was built through sustained grassroots outreach among local ethnic communities including the Rajbanshi, Koch, Mech, and Rava populations, coupled with a substantial expansion of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) shakhas and educational institutions throughout the district.
However, the 2024 Lok Sabha elections delivered a notable setback to the party's momentum in the region. The Trinamool Congress managed to wrest the Cooch Behar parliamentary seat from BJP control, with former Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nisith Pramanik losing by a margin of nearly 40,000 votes. Furthermore, the BJP ceded leads in four assembly segments within the district, indicating shifting political dynamics.
BJP's Recovery Efforts and Development Initiatives
Since the 2024 parliamentary election results, the BJP has been actively working to recover lost ground in Cooch Behar. As part of these efforts, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone last year for a substantial city gas distribution project valued at Rs 1,010 crore. This infrastructure initiative is designed to cover both Cooch Behar and the neighboring Alipurduar district, representing a tangible development commitment to the region.
Manifesto Development and Strategic Adjustments
On the policy front, the West Bengal unit of the BJP indicated on Sunday that national president Nitin Nabin may formally release the party's election manifesto within the state. An earlier arrangement to have Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveil the document on Saturday was postponed after the party's top leadership decided to incorporate additional changes, resulting in a delay of several days for publication.
A dedicated team led by economist Ashok Lahiri has been meticulously working on the manifesto for over a month. Nabin, who visited West Bengal last week, engaged in detailed discussions regarding the document's contents and strategic positioning.
Charge Sheet Against Trinamool Government
On Saturday, Home Minister Amit Shah instead released a comprehensive 14-point "charge sheet" targeting the ruling Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal. A senior BJP leader from the state clarified the strategic approach, stating, "The charge sheet has systematically pointed out the multiple failures of governance under the current administration; the forthcoming manifesto will provide the concrete answers and solutions to these challenges."
Key Nominations and Leadership Presence
In related political developments, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to file his nomination from the Nandigram constituency on Monday. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is expected to be present during this nomination filing process. Additionally, there are indications that Home Minister Amit Shah may accompany Adhikari when he files his nomination from the Bhowanipore constituency, underscoring the national leadership's direct involvement in West Bengal's electoral landscape.
