Patna's Nehru Path Set for Major 14-Lane Expansion to Combat Traffic Congestion

The bustling Bailey Road, officially known as Nehru Path in Patna, is poised for a transformative infrastructure upgrade. A critical 2.7-kilometer stretch from Rupaspur to Saguna Mor will be dramatically widened from its current configuration to a massive 14 lanes. This ambitious project, with an estimated cost of Rs 318 crore, is being executed by the Road Construction Department (RCD) and is targeted for completion by December this year.

Addressing Decade-Long Urban Growth and Congestion

The expansion has been urgently necessitated by explosive urban development in the corridor. Over the past decade, the local population has surged tenfold, leading to severe and chronic traffic bottlenecks. An RCD official highlighted the existing challenges, noting that while sections like the stretch from Saguna Mor to Income-Tax Golambar are signal-free, major jams persist beyond the Rupaspur railway overbridge at key intersections like Gola Road Mor and RPS Mor.

"After widening the Nehru Path from Rupaspur Bridge to Saguna Mor, smooth traffic flow will be available from Dakbungla Roundabout to Danapur," the official stated, underscoring the project's broader impact on regional connectivity.

Project Details and Construction Methodology

The existing road currently functions as a 10-lane thoroughfare, comprising a six-lane main carriageway flanked by two-lane service roads on each side. The expansion to 14 lanes will be achieved through an innovative engineering approach. The construction of box drains on both sides of the road will form the foundation for the additional lanes.

Executive Engineer (West) of RCD, Shashi Bhushan Sahay, explained the process: "Currently, the construction work on the box drains is being done at four places on both sides. It is a drain-cum-road project, where the road will be built on the drain, similar to the Ashiana Nagar-Digha Road model." The work involves building a base, constructing walls, and finally covering the drains with slabs to create the new road surface.

Catalysts for the Expansion: Unprecedented Development

The driving force behind this massive investment is the area's metamorphosis over the last twenty years. Hundreds of new residential colonies and numerous apartment complexes have sprung up along Nehru Path. This residential boom has been accompanied by the proliferation of shopping complexes, retail outlets, and several marriage halls, all contributing to peak-hour traffic gridlock.

Recognizing these compounding factors, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced the project during his 'Pragati Yatra' in February of last year. The initiative represents a direct governmental response to the infrastructure demands created by Patna's rapid urbanization, aiming to ensure smoother commutes and support continued economic growth in the state capital.
