Mumbai: In a significant political development, the opposition managed to block a proposal to amalgamate a 760-square-meter plot of land owned by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with a redevelopment project being carried out by Godrej Projects Development Ltd on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg in Wadala. The proposal, which was brought in as urgent business, was rejected after Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) corporators voted against it.
Historic Opposition Victory
For the first time, the opposition successfully blocked a proposal that had been passed by the Improvements Committee and was being presented as urgent business by the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance. Civic officials stated that the amalgamation of the plot was intended to rehabilitate slum dwellers residing on the land.
According to Congress group leader Ashraf Azmi, opposition corporators objected to the proposal, alleging that it sought to grant a municipal plot in Wadala to the Godrej company through irregular means. During the voting, the opposition voted against the motion, and since the proposal required a two-thirds majority under urgent business, the ruling combine fell short. The ruling combine had 68 corporators present, while the opposition had 58.
Azmi said, "This marks a significant first victory for the citizens of Mumbai and the opposition party. We will not allow the passage of any proposal that is pushed through arbitrarily by the ruling party."
Opposition Raises Concerns Over Arbitrary Actions
Azmi further elaborated, "We are not opposed to this proposal, but why do they need to bring such a proposal as urgent business? We have not opposed urgent business like the Mithi river desilting contracts and promotion of BMC staffers in the past. But the actions of the BJP-Shiv Sena ruling combine are arbitrary. Earlier too, they pushed through a proposal regarding cath labs using this method. There should be a discussion on issues of public importance, and the ruling combine does not want any discussion to take place. That is the reason they brought the proposal as urgent business."
The opposition's success in blocking the motion highlights growing tensions within the civic body and sets a precedent for future contentious proposals.
