Bhubaneswar: In preparation for the upcoming visits of President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mayurbhanj district, Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania on Wednesday directed local police to step up vigilance along the borders with West Bengal and Jharkhand.
Security Review and Planning
President Murmu is scheduled to arrive in Mayurbhanj on June 19, followed by Prime Minister Modi the next day. Both leaders will attend a joint programme at Rairangpur on June 20, marking two years of the Mohan Charan Majhi-led BJP government in Odisha. DGP Khurania reviewed security arrangements for the President on Wednesday, and officials indicated that a separate meeting would be convened soon to finalise the Prime Minister's security plan.
Border Vigilance and Local Checks
“As Mayurbhanj is a border district, we cannot afford any lapses. Inter-state borders will see intensified checking and patrolling,” a senior police officer stated after the high-level meeting chaired by Khurania. The DGP also ordered regular inspections of local hotels, lodges, and other accommodations to eliminate any potential security loopholes.
Venue Security and Crowd Management
Given the likelihood of large public gatherings, strict measures will be enforced at all venues. Multilayered security rings will be established at the helipad, meeting venues, and along VVIP travel routes. Technical checks and anti-sabotage measures will be fully operational. Traffic diversions will be implemented on major roads in Mayurbhanj to minimise public inconvenience, and additional parking areas near programme venues have been identified.
Deployment of Special Forces
For crowd control and emergency response, the Special Operations Group (SOG), striking force, and K-9 special squads will be deployed. Additional CCTV cameras and drone surveillance will monitor the entire area. “Emergency medical services, fire safety, and traffic management will be in place, with swift coordination from the district administration,” another senior officer said.
Emphasis on Alertness
The DGP instructed officers to maintain heightened alertness and readiness to respond promptly to any situation, underscoring the importance of flawless execution during the high-profile visits.
