Odisha Assembly Proceedings Paralyzed for Fifth Consecutive Day Amidst Opposition Protests

The Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed continued disruption for the fifth straight day as opposition parties intensified their protests over pressing farmers' issues, compelling Speaker Surama Padhy to repeatedly adjourn the proceedings. The stalemate, which began last Wednesday, shows no signs of abating as political tensions escalate within the state legislature.

Chaotic Scenes During Question Hour as Opposition MLAs Storm the Well

Moments after the House reconvened for the crucial Question Hour at 10:30 am, members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) stormed into the well of the Assembly, brandishing placards and raising slogans. Their primary allegation centered on the state government's alleged failure to lift paddy stocks, forcing farmers into distress sales of their produce. Congress legislators swiftly joined the protest, amplifying the chorus of dissent and creating a tumultuous atmosphere.

Faced with the unruly scene and unable to restore order, Speaker Surama Padhy was left with no choice but to adjourn the House until 11:30 am. This initial adjournment set the tone for another day of legislative paralysis in Bhubaneswar.

Protest Persists and Epstein Files Controversy Erupts

When the Assembly reassembled at 11:30 am, the opposition protests showed no signs of relenting. During this session, Congress Legislature Party leader Rama Chandra Kadam introduced a new dimension to the disruption by raising the contentious issue of the Epstein files. This move immediately drew sharp reactions from the treasury benches.

BJP MLAs Irasis Acharya, Ashok Mohanty, and Sanatan Bijuli strongly countered Kadam's remarks, demanding that his statements on the Epstein files be expunged from the official records. The ensuing debate further fueled the chaos, leading Speaker Padhy to adjourn the proceedings once more, this time until 4 pm in the afternoon.

Accusations Fly as Both Sides Trade Blame

BJP MLA Irasis Acharya accused the opposition of deliberately seeking excuses to stall the Assembly's functioning, thereby hindering governance. His colleague, BJP MLA Om Prakash Mishra, echoed this sentiment, criticizing the opposition for wasting valuable Assembly time funded by public money instead of constructively raising issues of public interest.

Outside the Assembly premises, Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati launched a counter-offensive, alleging that the ruling party appeared unserious about conducting House business smoothly. Meanwhile, BJD MLA Sarada Prasanna Jena highlighted ongoing grievances, stating that despite Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi's assurance against weight deductions in paddy on quality grounds, such deductions persist, and the government has failed to address the core issue effectively.

Roots of the Crisis: Mandi Management and Political Posturing

The current impasse traces its origins to the ongoing mandi crisis that has kept the Assembly tense since Saturday. Both the BJD and Congress have consistently alleged that poor management of market yards designated for paddy procurement by the state government is directly responsible for pushing farmers into distress sales.

When the House convened on Monday, the BJD continued its steadfast protest focusing on the mandi issue, while the Congress strategically shifted its attention to the "Epstein file" controversy, adding a layer of national and international intrigue to the state-level political drama. This dual-pronged opposition strategy has effectively gridlocked the Odisha Assembly, raising serious questions about legislative productivity and governance in the state.
