Guwahati: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam has nominated Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator and medical practitioner Dr Habbey Teron as its candidate for the deputy speaker position in the state assembly, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced.
First MLA from New Constituency
Dr Teron represents the Amri (Scheduled Tribe) Hills constituency in West Karbi Anglong district and holds the distinction of being the first elected representative from this newly created assembly segment.
"A medical professional by training and the first elected representative from the newly created Amri constituency, Dr Teron represents the aspirations of our tribal communities," Sarma posted on social media platform X.
Election Timeline
The election for the deputy speaker is anticipated to take place during the budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, which commences on July 6. The position has remained vacant since the formation of the 16th legislative assembly. BJP veteran Ranjeet Kumar Dass was elected speaker during the inaugural session of the new House in May.
The NDA secured a third consecutive term in Assam by winning 102 out of 126 seats in the recent assembly elections.
