In a significant action under the election model code of conduct, vigilance teams in Navi Mumbai seized a large sum of unaccounted cash from a luxury vehicle on Friday. The operation highlights the strict surveillance measures in place for the upcoming civic body elections.
Major Cash Haul During Vehicle Check
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's (NMMC) Static Surveillance Team (SST) intercepted a Mercedes Benz car at a check post located near the APMC market in the afternoon. During a routine inspection around 12:30 PM, officials discovered Rs 16.16 lakh in cash stored inside a plastic bag in the vehicle's boot.
The car was being driven by Piyush Bhanushali, who identified himself as a spice trader operating from the APMC market in Turbhe. A dedicated Video Surveillance Team (VST) was also present at the spot to document the entire process and record evidence of the seizure, ensuring transparency.
Documents Sought, IT Department Informed
According to Assistant Municipal Commissioner (AMC) Sagar More, Bhanushali provided certain documents claiming to explain the source of the substantial cash. However, as the amount exceeded the permissible limit without valid documentation during the election period, the cash was confiscated on the spot.
"The documents provided by the individual regarding the cash source will be verified," stated AMC More. The authorities have formally informed the Mumbai Income Tax (IT) department officials about the seizure for a thorough investigation into the origin and intended use of the money.
Stringent Vigilance for NMMC Elections 2025-2026
The action was taken under the strict guidelines of the Election Commission of India (ECI). The Deputy Municipal Commissioner (DMC), who is the nodal officer for the code of conduct, clarified the rule. "As per ECI regulations, during the model code of conduct, any person found carrying cash exceeding Rs 50,000 without proper supporting documents faces seizure," the officer explained.
The officer further noted that since the seized amount was over Rs 10 lakhs, it mandated immediate reporting to the Income Tax authorities for a deeper probe. To enforce the code of conduct for the NMMC general elections, the corporation has established a robust surveillance network.
As per an official press release from the NMMC PRO department, the State Election Commission (SEC) has directed the setup of 27 Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs). These teams are deployed across the NMMC jurisdiction, including city entry points and nine major junctions. They operate in three shifts to maintain 24x7 vigilance, checking vehicles to prevent the misuse of cash, liquor, or any other items for influencing voters.
This seizure near the bustling APMC market underscores the administration's commitment to conducting free and fair elections by curbing the flow of unaccounted money.
