Navi Mumbai Minister Directs Waiver of Property Tax Penalty for Gaothan Homes
In a significant move aimed at public welfare, Forest Minister Ganesh Naik has issued directives to the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) leadership to waive a three-fold property tax penalty imposed on 'need-based houses' located in gaothans. This penalty was levied due to unauthorised additional constructions on these properties.
Immediate Action Ordered for Public Benefit
During a crucial meeting with Mayor Sujata Patil, Deputy Mayor Dashrath Bhagat, and BJP group leader Sagar Naik, Minister Naik instructed them to take immediate decisions in the interest of city development and resident welfare. He emphasised that a formal proposal to revoke this penalty will be presented at an upcoming general body meeting of the NMMC.
Minister Naik stated, "The elected body possesses the authority to alter this policy, and it is imperative we act swiftly to alleviate the burden on our citizens."
Widespread Impact and Historical Context
NMMC sources confirmed that the enforcement of this penalty is legally permissible and has been in effect since January 2008. Its waiver is projected to benefit more than 75,000 property holders across Navi Mumbai, providing substantial financial relief to families residing in these gaothan areas.
In addition to the tax relief, Minister Naik has called for the formation of a high-level committee. This panel is tasked with preparing a white paper to present a detailed and factual account of the civic works undertaken during the last six years when the NMMC was under administrative rule.
Addressing Past Concerns and Future Stability
Naik highlighted that during the administrator's tenure, he and numerous residents had raised objections to certain decisions made by the civic body. The proposed white paper aims to bring transparency and clarity to that period's activities.
Looking ahead, the minister assured residents of fiscal stability, noting that property taxes and water charges have not been increased in the past 25 years. He firmly declared that there will be no such hikes in the foreseeable future, offering long-term reassurance to the community.
The NMMC budget is scheduled for presentation in March, setting the stage for these proposed changes to be formally integrated into the civic financial plan.
