Namakkal Families Allege Ostracism Over Fishing Rights Dispute

In a significant development from Namakkal district, ten families residing in Atthappampatty village have formally submitted a petition to District Collector Durga Moorthy. The families allege that they have been ostracised by a section of villagers due to their opposition to what they describe as selfish fishing activities.

Petition Seeks Collector's Intervention

The affected families have urgently sought the collector's intervention to address the alleged social exclusion. According to their petition, some villagers have utilized fishing rights to engage in large-scale commercial activities, selling fish to generate substantial income. While these activities were purportedly claimed to benefit the wider community, the families argue that only a small group has profited, leading to targeted harassment against those who questioned the practice.

Allegations of Community Exclusion

The families report being systematically excluded from community interactions and local support systems, creating a hostile environment. N Kandasamy, one of the affected villagers, provided detailed insights into the origins of the conflict. He explained that three years ago, public funds were collected to facilitate water transfer from Oomaiyampatty lake to Atthappampatty and Sikkidichipalayam lakes.

With that money, a pipeline was laid, water was brought in, and the lakes were filled, Kandasamy stated. Following this, large-scale commercial fish farming commenced annually, with auctions held for the sale of harvested fish. Kandasamy alleged that profits from these ventures were monopolized by a select few, and when opposition was voiced, the families faced verbal insults and intimidation.

Official Response and Action

District Collector Durga Moorthy confirmed receipt of the petition and has taken initial steps to address the issue. I have forwarded the petition to the Tiruchengode revenue divisional officer and tahsildar to look into this matter, she stated, indicating that an investigation is underway to examine the allegations of ostracism and unfair fishing practices.

This case highlights ongoing tensions in rural communities over resource management and equitable benefit-sharing, underscoring the need for transparent governance and conflict resolution mechanisms.
