Nagpur's New Civic Body: BJP Corporators Dominate Wealth Rankings
The newly elected Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) presents a House filled with fresh faces and new mandates. A striking feature emerges from the personal wealth declarations of several members. Scrutiny of affidavits submitted by elected corporators reveals that the city's richest representatives overwhelmingly belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This highlights a clear financial dominance by the ruling party within the civic body.
Top Wealth Holders in the Corporation
BJP's Virendra Kukreja tops the list by a wide margin. He declared total assets worth a staggering 94.95 crore rupees. His wealth distribution shows substantial movable assets exceeding 71 crore and immovable properties valued over 23 crore.
Congress corporator Kumudini Gudadhe occupies the second spot with declared assets of 27.10 crore. She stands as the wealthiest corporator outside the BJP. Her affidavit indicates a near-even split between movable and immovable assets, reflecting a diversified financial profile.
BJP's Sadhna Barde follows with total declared assets nearing 35 crore. High-value immovable properties largely drive her wealth. Another prominent name is BJP's Yogita Telang, who declared assets exceeding 54 crore. This places her among the top tier of wealthy corporators. Her affidavit shows a comparatively modest annual income but substantial accumulated assets, a pattern observed across several high net-worth candidates.
Mid-Range and Notable Declarations
Sandeep Gawai appears midway down the list with total assets of 10.39 crore. His wealth primarily comprises immovable property. Congress leader Shila Tarale also figures among the wealthier corporators with declared assets over 20 crore.
The 5-8 crore bracket includes several familiar BJP names:
- Amol Shamkule (7.49 crore)
- Tara Yadav (7.43 crore)
- Sanjay Ugale (5.71 crore)
- Narendra Borkar (5.17 crore)
Their affidavits reveal a mix of residential properties, land holdings, investments, and cash. Immovable assets form the dominant share in their declarations.
Former mayor Maya Iwnate declared assets worth 4.06 crore. The lone NCP corporator, Abha Pande, completes the list with a declaration of 3.68 crore in assets.
Political Implications and Public Expectations
Political observers note that such financial muscle often translates into stronger campaign machinery. It provides higher visibility and sustained backing during elections. With civic responsibilities now in their hands, attention will inevitably turn to their performance on the ground.
For Nagpur's voters, the expectation remains clear. Wealth and influence must translate into accountable governance. The city watches as its newly elected representatives begin their terms.
