MVA Urged to Move No-Confidence Motion Against Maharashtra Assembly Speaker
As the budget session commences in Maharashtra without a Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in both Houses for the first time in many years, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut has called for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to file a no-confidence motion against Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar. Raut made this demand on Sunday, alleging that the assembly is being managed in an arbitrary and mob-like fashion.
Allegations of Arbitrary Conduct and Delayed LoP Appointment
Raut highlighted that a letter requesting the appointment of an LoP was submitted to the Chief Minister a year ago, but rules regarding the 10% strength requirement are being cited as obstacles. The CM has stated that this decision is not within his authority but falls under the Speaker's purview. Raut criticized Narwekar, referencing recent allegations of the Speaker interfering in a land dispute, saying, "The person who goes to a village and makes a fuss to seize land is the Speaker."
He further accused Narwekar of making bogus decisions in the disqualification of Shiv Sena MLAs, asserting that such actions prevent the appointment of an LoP. "The person who sits in the chair of the Speaker and takes a bogus decision on Shiv Sena MLAs' disqualification will never take a decision on appointing an LoP," Raut emphasized.
Conspiracy Allegations and Democratic Concerns
Raut revealed that the MVA had approved Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Bhaskar Jadhav for the assembly LoP position. He alleged a conspiracy to keep the post vacant in the legislative council as well. Expressing grave concerns about democratic principles, Raut warned, "The CM should take into account that if such strangulation and murder of democracy is taking place in the state from which Dr Ambedkar created the Constitution, it will be recorded in history."
This situation underscores the ongoing political tensions in Maharashtra, with the absence of an LoP raising questions about legislative oversight and democratic norms during the critical budget session.
