Mumbai BMC Election Results 2026: Counting Begins Today for 227 Wards
The stage is set for a crucial day in Mumbai's political landscape. The counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections commences today, January 16, 2026. This process follows the elections held on January 15 across 29 municipalities in Maharashtra, including the BMC.
Counting Process and Security Arrangements
Counting will begin at 10 am sharp. Officials have designated 23 counting centres spread throughout Mumbai. Each centre will operate under the direct supervision of an appointed Election Returning Officer.
The civic body has implemented stringent security measures. All counting venues will remain under round-the-clock surveillance. CCTV cameras will monitor every corner, and a strong police presence will ensure law and order is maintained throughout the day.
Voter Turnout and Electoral Scale
Though the final voter turnout figures are still awaited, preliminary estimates from officials suggest a participation rate of approximately 52 to 54 percent. A total of 12,442,373 eligible voters exercised their franchise to elect 227 ward members for the BMC.
The Key Political Battle
The electoral contest is intense. The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance faces a significant challenge. Their main opponents are the reunited Thackeray cousins. Raj Thackeray leads the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, while Uddhav Thackeray heads the Shiv Sena (UBT).
Control of the cash-rich BMC is the ultimate prize. The corporation manages an annual budget exceeding ₹74,000 crore. Other parties are also in the fray, including the NCP, its rival NCP (SP), the Congress, and the Samajwadi Party.
Looking Back: The 2017 BMC Election
The last BMC election in 2017 saw a closely fought battle. The then-united Shiv Sena emerged as the leading party, securing 84 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party followed closely with 82 seats.
Other parties also made their presence felt. The Congress won 31 seats, while the Nationalist Congress Party secured 9 seats. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena got 7 seats, and the Samajwadi Party won 6 seats. Independent candidates captured 5 seats. The All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen won 2 seats, and the Akhil Bharatiya Sena secured 1 seat.
Today's results will determine the new political leadership of India's financial capital. All eyes are on the counting centres as the fate of 227 wards is decided.
