Mohali Demolition Drive Sparks Outcry Over Alleged VIP Bias
In Mohali's Phase 7, a Municipal Corporation demolition drive has ignited controversy. Residents are accusing the civic body of selective action. They claim that houses belonging to VIPs, senior officers, and politicians were conspicuously spared.
Residents Voice Resentment Against MC
Many residents did not obstruct the drive. However, several expressed sharp criticism. They alleged that demolition teams targeted common people while overlooking encroachments by influential persons.
Ranjit Singh, a Phase 7 resident, questioned the MC's impartiality. He said, "It appears the high court's orders are meant only for the common man. Even today, MC teams skipped encroachments outside houses of high-profile people."
The local community voiced similar concerns. They pointed out illegal structures outside VIP residences remained untouched. This has drawn widespread criticism and fueled allegations of bias.
MC Commissioner Defends Drive as Impartial
MC Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh responded to the allegations. He maintained the drive follows strict directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Singh stated, "We are acting as per the high court's orders. No one will be spared. Any encroachment on government land will be removed, irrespective of who the encroacher is."
The commissioner outlined the demolition sequence. It began with 'B' roads in Phase 7. Market areas and inner roads will follow in subsequent phases.
Local Councillor Appeals for Voluntary Compliance
Local Councillor Anuradha Anand made a public appeal. She urged residents to voluntarily remove encroachments from government land. This, she said, would help them avoid penalties and coercive action by the MC.
The demolition drive remained largely peaceful. Minor resistance occurred at a few locations. No major law and order situation was reported during the operation.
MC Announces Future Plans and Warnings
The Municipal Corporation has announced further action. A continuous anti-encroachment drive will launch across Mohali starting January 19.
Commissioner Singh issued clear warnings. He said any damage to property during removal would be the encroacher's responsibility. The MC will also issue notices to violators.
Expenses incurred during demolition operations will be recovered from violators. This recovery will follow strict rules and legal provisions.
High Court Orders Drive Comprehensive Scope
Commissioner Singh reiterated the drive's legal basis. It complies with Punjab and Haryana High Court directions. The court ordered removal of illegal encroachments from various areas.
These include residential, commercial, and industrial zones. Parks, roads, footpaths, and all categories of government land within MC jurisdiction are also covered.
The MC denies all bias claims. Officials assert the drive targets all encroachments equally. They emphasize their commitment to following court orders without exception.
