Tragic Electrocution Claims Migrant Worker's Life During Temple Festival Preparations

A 42-year-old migrant laborer lost his life in a tragic electrocution incident while helping to erect a festival arch in the early hours of Sunday morning. The fatal accident occurred near Vellanad, within the Thiruvananthapuram district, casting a shadow over local temple celebrations.

Details of the Fatal Incident

According to police reports and local sources, the victim has been identified as Khatibul Rahman, also known as Rafiq. He was a native of Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, working far from his home state. The incident unfolded around 2 AM when Rahman and five other workers were constructing an iron arch for an upcoming temple festival.

While lifting the metal structure, the arch accidentally made contact with an overhead electric line, resulting in a powerful shock. All six individuals holding the arch collapsed immediately at the scene from the electrical current.

Emergency Response and Medical Efforts

Five of the workers regained consciousness shortly after the initial collapse. However, Rahman remained in critical condition. His colleagues attempted to revive him by administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

He briefly regained consciousness but soon collapsed again, according to witnesses. Rahman was first rushed to the Vellanad Government Hospital for emergency care. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to Neyyar Medicity in Kattakkada for advanced medical treatment.

Despite these efforts, doctors at Neyyar Medicity declared him dead upon arrival. Preliminary investigations suggest that Rahman may have suffered a fatal heart attack following the severe electric shock.

Contributing Factors and Background

Kanjiramkulam panchayat president V B Anilkumar provided additional context, revealing that Rahman's colleagues informed authorities about his medical history. The deceased worker had previously undergone treatment for a heart-related ailment, which likely exacerbated the effects of the electrocution.

Another significant factor emerged during the investigation. While the other five workers were reportedly wearing protective sandals during the task, Rahman was working barefoot at the time of the accident. This lack of insulation is believed to have contributed substantially to the severity of the electric shock he experienced.

Official Procedures and Aftermath

The local police have registered the case and are conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. Rahman's body was shifted to the Medical College Hospital for a comprehensive postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

This unfortunate event highlights the occupational hazards faced by migrant workers, particularly those engaged in construction and manual labor without adequate safety measures. The community has expressed shock and sorrow over the preventable tragedy that occurred during what should have been festive preparations.
