The Manipur government has stated that it is actively addressing the issues raised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), including a demand for a probe into the Tronglaobi incident. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand said the government is treating the case as highly important and is working with security agencies to ensure swift action.
Background of the Protests
The protests were sparked by an attack in Moirang on April 7, which killed two children and injured their mother. This incident has intensified public anger and led to renewed demands for justice. COCOMI, a civil society group, has been pressing the government to investigate the Tronglaobi incident and take action against those responsible.
Government's Response
Chief Minister Khemchand assured that the government is prioritizing the case and collaborating with security agencies to expedite the investigation. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam acknowledged that the state has been witnessing tension since the incident and emphasized that dialogue is the way forward. He noted that COCOMI had skipped recent talks, urging the group to return to the negotiating table.
Clashes During the March
Protests in Imphal turned tense on Tuesday as crowds attempted to march to the Chief Minister's residence. Police stopped the demonstrators, leading to clashes. Authorities resorted to using tear gas to disperse the crowd. The situation has raised concerns about law and order in the state.
The government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and resolving the issues through constructive dialogue. Further meetings with COCOMI are expected in the coming days.
