Congress Protests in Mandya Over National Herald Case, Accuses BJP of Vendetta
Mandya Congress protests BJP over National Herald case

In a significant show of political force, the Mandya District Congress Committee staged a vigorous protest on Thursday, directly accusing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in vendetta politics. The agitation was specifically organized to oppose the Union government's handling of the long-running National Herald case, which Congress alleges is being weaponized to target its top leadership.

Protest and Police Intervention

The protest unfolded in Subhash Nagar, where Congress activists attempted to lay siege to the local BJP office. Raising loud slogans against the BJP and leaders of the central government, the workers charged the Centre with acting in clear violation of constitutional values. Their primary grievance was the alleged conspiracy to implicate All India Congress Committee (AICC) leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.

As the protesters advanced towards their target, a strong police contingent intervened swiftly. Law enforcement officials erected barricades to physically prevent the siege, leading to a tense but brief standoff at the site. When police attempted to detain some of the agitators, Congress leaders on the ground intensified their protest, momentarily escalating tensions. However, heavy police deployment ensured that law and order was maintained throughout the incident, preventing any major untoward incident.

Allegations of Political Weaponization

Senior Congress leaders used the platform to launch a sharp verbal attack on the Prime Minister and the BJP-led central government. MUDA chairman BP Prakash alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was blatantly misusing the National Herald case as a political weapon with the sole intention of suppressing the Congress party. He claimed that recent observations from the court had served as a setback to the Centre's narrative in the case.

Prakash demanded that the Prime Minister immediately abandon what he described as a hostile and vindictive approach towards Congress leaders. Echoing this sentiment, Mandya District Congress Committee working president MS Chidambar asserted that the BJP's attempt to entrap Congress leaders through this legal avenue had conclusively failed. He branded the case as fundamentally illegal and driven purely by political malice.

Congress Demands Apology

Chidambar went a step further by demanding an immediate and unconditional apology from the BJP for what he termed as misleading the public and wasting the nation's time and judicial resources. The protest in Mandya is seen as part of a broader strategy by the Congress to mobilize its cadre and publicly challenge the BJP on what it perceives as politically motivated investigations.

The event underscores the continuing political friction in Karnataka, where the Congress is the main opposition party. It highlights how national-level issues, especially those involving legal cases against prominent political families, quickly translate into street-level agitations and become focal points for regional political mobilization.
