A tragic road accident claimed the life of a 45-year-old man in the early hours of Saturday in Thiruvananthapuram. The victim, identified as Anshad, died after the two-wheeler he was riding skidded and plunged into a deep, uncovered roadside drain.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The accident took place around 3 am on Saturday near a curve close to LPS in the Andoorkonam area. Anshad, a resident of AS Manzil in Andoorkonam, was returning home from his workplace. He was employed at a private coaching centre located in Kazhakkoottam.
According to police reports, the scooter lost control at a bend in front of a bus stop situated near a school. The vehicle overturned and fell into a deep, open drain running beside the road. In a devastating turn of events, the scooter fell on top of Anshad, trapping him in the drain and preventing his escape.
Rescue Attempt and Aftermath
Alert locals who noticed the scooter's headlight still on in the drain immediately sprang into action. They informed the Manglapuram police and called for an ambulance. Anshad was rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment.
However, despite the swift response, doctors at the hospital declared him dead on arrival. The impact and subsequent drowning in the drain proved fatal.
Police Investigation and Safety Concerns
The Manglapuram police have registered a case regarding the incident and have initiated further investigative procedures. This tragic event has once again highlighted the severe public safety hazard posed by uncovered and deep roadside drains, especially on poorly lit stretches and near curves.
The death of Anshad underscores the urgent need for municipal authorities to audit and secure such dangerous infrastructure to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The community in Andoorkonam is left mourning the loss while questioning the negligence that led to this preventable accident.
