The issue reportedly originated when Mammootty, during his unannounced visit to the township on Saturday, expressed clear dissatisfaction with the presence of CPM's Wayanad district secretary, K Rafeeq, standing close to him. According to multiple reports, the actor questioned Rafeeq about his proximity, remarking that such closeness might lead people to assume his visit was orchestrated or endorsed by the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist). This seemingly minor interaction quickly escalated into a major political talking point.
CPM Leaders Attempt to Downplay the Incident
Senior leaders from the ruling CPM moved swiftly to mitigate the growing controversy. Minister P A Mohammed Riyas, in a television interview, emphasized that CPM district secretaries do not unnecessarily intrude into spaces. He clarified that Rafeeq was present at the township in his capacity as a social activist who had been actively involved in relief and rehabilitation efforts following the devastating landslide. Riyas further stated that Mammootty recognizes individuals across political lines and visited the township independently to understand the ground situation.
Meanwhile, another minister, P Rajeev, speaking to reporters in Kochi, praised Mammootty for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit the survivors. He highlighted that the actor's visit had brought additional visibility to the government's ambitious township project, which aims to provide permanent housing for those displaced by the natural disaster.
Congress Leader Condemns "Cruel" Online Attacks
Congress leader Cherian Philip issued a strong statement condemning what he described as "cruel" online attacks on Mammootty by CPM supporters. Philip alleged that the backlash intensified after the actor remarked that the township was constructed using public funds belonging to all sections of Kerala's society. He further accused some CPM leaders of attempting to transform Mammootty's private visit into a party publicity exercise, which ultimately led to the actor's expression of displeasure. "As a public worker, it is always our practice to receive visitors who come to the township if we happen to be present there. However, I understood that he was pointing out that such actions could sometimes be interpreted differently," Rafeeq wrote.
He expressed regret that the issue had been magnified by certain media outlets and right-wing groups, leading to personal insults. While respecting the emotional reactions, Rafeeq appealed to everyone not to let the controversy overshadow the significance of the township project. "Mammootty has personally clarified to me that he never intended to insult me," Rafeeq stated, urging all parties to end debates and arguments related to the issue and to discuss the actor's visit only in a positive light.

Mammootty's visit was to the newly inaugurated Wayanad Model Township at Elton Estate, a project spearheaded by the Kerala government to rehabilitate survivors of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslide that occurred on July 30, 2024. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the first phase on March 1, handing over 178 newly constructed houses to families who had lost everything in the disaster. These families had been living in rented accommodations and temporary shelters for months prior.
During his tour, Mammootty visited several completed houses, interacted with beneficiaries and local residents, and commended the collective effort behind the township.
