In a significant development for Kolkata's cultural landscape, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to lay the foundation stone for 'Durga Angan', a sprawling temple complex dedicated to Goddess Durga, in New Town on Monday. This ambitious project, estimated to cost Rs 262 crore, is poised to become the largest temple complex of its kind in India.
A Monumental Project Takes Shape
The temple complex will be constructed on a vast 15-acre plot of land located opposite the popular Eco Park in New Town. The execution of this grand project has been entrusted to Hidco (Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation), the same agency that successfully delivered the Digha Jagannath Dham and is currently building the Mahakal Mandir in Siliguri.
According to Hidco chairperson and state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, "Durga Angan will be dedicated to Durga and the complex will also host temples of Shiva and Durga's four children." The foundation stone-laying ceremony by the Chief Minister marks the formal commencement of this landmark initiative.
From Announcement to Reality: The Journey
The seeds for this project were sown earlier this year when CM Mamata Banerjee announced plans to establish a permanent Durga temple during the July 21 Martyrs' Day rally. Following the announcement, the state cabinet gave its approval, prompting the tourism department and Hidco to identify a suitable location in or around the city.
A key catalyst for this initiative is the global recognition received by Durga Puja. Four years ago, UNESCO conferred the prestigious 'World Intangible Heritage' status on the festival. A state official highlighted that this international accolade spurred the move to create a dedicated temple complex that would serve as both a place of worship and a major tourist attraction, drawing inspiration from the successful Jagannath temple model in Digha.
Construction Timeline and Management
Preliminary groundwork at the site has already begun. Officials estimate that the entire project will take nearly two years to complete. To oversee the construction and subsequent management of the temple complex, a dedicated trust will be formed, as confirmed by a government official.
The official further elaborated on the vision, stating, "Once set up, 'Durga Angan' will showcase the vibrant cultural heritage of Durga Puja round the year." The UNESCO tag has already generated significant interest in Durga Puja from audiences across India and abroad, and this complex aims to channel that interest into a permanent, year-round destination.
With its strategic location, immense scale, and cultural significance, Durga Angan is set to redefine Kolkata's spiritual and tourist map, creating a legacy monument that celebrates Bengal's rich devotional traditions on a global stage.
