Mamata Banerjee: Bengal Will Pave Way for BJP's Downfall

Mamata Banerjee Declares Bengal Will Lead BJP's Inevitable Downfall

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee delivered a powerful political statement on Sunday, asserting that Bengal, which historically broke the shackles of colonial rule, will now pave the way for the inevitable downfall of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Trinamool Congress supremo launched a sharp attack on the saffron party, accusing it of attempting to replace the Constitution with its own party manifesto.

Unprecedented Assault on Democratic Foundations

Speaking on International Women's Day, Banerjee characterized the current political situation as unprecedented and deeply unfortunate. "What we are witnessing today is a direct assault on the democratic foundations of this republic," she declared in a social media post. "In their 'One Nation, One Leader, One Party' frenzy, BJP has systematically weaponised every democratic institution and every constitutional post to serve their own anti-people ambitions."

The Chief Minister specifically accused the BJP of misusing the Vanish Commission to erase legitimate voters from electoral rolls. "This is what they want. They want to replace Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution with their party manifesto," Banerjee wrote emphatically. "I have not stood for this. I will not stand for this."

Women's Day Protest Against LPG Price Hike

Banerjee's words came as Trinamool Congress women leaders and supporters, dressed in black and carrying kitchen utensils, staged a significant protest in Kolkata. The demonstration targeted both the recent LPG price hike and what they described as large-scale deletion of women voters following the Special Intensive Revision process.

State ministers Shashi Panja and Chandrima Bhattacharya, along with TMC MP Mala Roy, led the women's protest from Subodh Mallick Square. Participants wore black sarees and carried empty plates and spatulas as symbolic representations of their struggle.

Panja explained the symbolism: "This vessel was supposed to contain food. But it's empty — how does one cook with such a high LPG price? CM Mamata Banerjee provides Lakshmir Bhandar; are you expected to spend that just to buy gas?"

Economic Hardship for Working Women

The protest highlighted the severe economic impact of the LPG price increase on working women. In Kolkata, a 14.2-kilogram LPG cylinder now costs Rs 939, representing the second significant hike in just eleven months. The previous increase occurred in April 2025 when prices rose by Rs 50, with the current hike attributed to ongoing tensions in West Asia.

A Gariahat market resident, who works as a house help earning approximately Rs 10,000 monthly, participated in Sunday's protest. She expressed her desperation: "If I spend Rs 939 to buy gas for cooking, I will not have money left to buy food to cook. What do I feed my family?"

When asked about the meaning of Women's Day, she responded poignantly: "To live with dignity. To celebrate my womanhood. But today, with the price hike of essential commodities, my livelihood and dignity seem to be in danger."

Political Standoff and Future Implications

Banerjee framed the Dharmatala dharna as Trinamool's answer to what she called every anti-Bengal agenda that seeks to humiliate, intimidate, and persecute the people of the state. "BJP's only priority is power. My priority is and always has been people," she asserted. "These zamindars of Delhi will never succeed in their mission to subjugate this great land."

The protest saw women from different wards under Kolkata Municipal Corporation and adjoining areas arriving in matadors to join the demonstration. The visual of women in black, carrying empty vessels and kitchen tools, created a powerful statement about the intersection of economic hardship and political resistance.

This confrontation represents a significant escalation in the ongoing political battle between the Trinamool Congress and BJP in West Bengal, with constitutional integrity and women's economic security emerging as central themes in the conflict.
