Malda Tragedy: Father Beaten to Death After Son's Fatal Shooting Spree

In a shocking incident in Malda, West Bengal, a man was brutally beaten to death by local villagers after his teenage son allegedly opened fire during a Holi celebration, killing a 10-year-old boy and injuring two others. The violent episode unfolded on Wednesday night, leading to widespread outrage and a swift police response.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Violence

According to police sources, the conflict began on Holi afternoon in the village of Mathurapur Kaharpara, located in the Manikchak area. A 17-year-old resident became embroiled in a heated altercation with several youths during the festive gathering. As tensions escalated, the teenager fled the scene on his two-wheeler, reportedly injuring some bystanders in his haste while others pursued him.

The chase culminated at the boy's home, where his father, identified as Samir Dasgupta, attempted to intervene by blocking the angry crowd at the door. In the midst of this confrontation, the son allegedly retrieved a licensed firearm and discharged multiple rounds into the crowd.

Casualties and Immediate Aftermath

The gunfire resulted in serious injuries to three individuals: Arun Mandal, Ghusu Rajak, and 10-year-old Samar Rajak. Tragically, the young Samar Rajak succumbed to his wounds after being rushed to a nearby hospital. Enraged by the shooting, the villagers then forcibly dragged Samir Dasgupta from his home and subjected him to a severe beating.

Police personnel arrived at the scene promptly to rescue Samir, but despite their efforts, he later died from the injuries inflicted during the assault. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the dangers of escalating disputes into fatal violence.

Police Investigation and Arrests

Malda Superintendent of Police Abhijit Banerjee confirmed that two separate cases have been registered in connection with the events. Three persons have been arrested so far as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have also seized the firearm used in the shooting and are conducting a thorough probe to determine all aspects of the case.

"The firearm was seized, and the probe is on," stated SP Banerjee, emphasizing the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating the matter. The arrests mark a critical step in addressing the violence and ensuring accountability for the tragic loss of life.

Community Impact and Broader Implications

This incident underscores the volatile nature of communal conflicts during festive occasions and raises concerns about gun violence in rural areas. The death of a child and the subsequent retaliatory killing have left the village in mourning, with calls for greater vigilance and conflict resolution mechanisms.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging calm and cooperation from the public to prevent further unrest. The case serves as a grim reminder of the need for effective policing and community dialogue to avert such tragedies in the future.
