The political landscape of Nashik and Jalgaon local authorities legislative council constituencies witnessed intense drama as the Mahayuti alliance struggled to contain rebellion within its ranks. While the ruling alliance managed a breakthrough in Nashik with BJP rebel candidate Gokul Gite announcing the end of his campaign, the political crisis in Jalgaon has taken a dramatic turn.
Nashik Rebellion Resolved
It took three ministers and six days in Nashik to convince Gite to withdraw his challenge against Shiv Sena’s Narendra Darade, the Mahayuti incumbent. However, the alliance appears to be struggling to achieve a similar feat in Jalgaon, where the rebel candidate remains elusive.
Jalgaon Crisis Deepens
Hours after water resources department minister Girish Mahajan claimed that the Jalgaon dispute was resolved following the understanding reached in Nashik, Shiv Sena rebel candidate in Jalgaon constituency Reshma Kale went “unreachable”. BJP’s Nandkishor Mahajan is the official candidate here.
This unexpected development unfolded shortly after a high-level coordination meeting of Mahayuti leaders was held in Jalgaon to defuse the tension. Absence of key figures during the meet raised eyebrows.
Jalgaon guardian minister Gulabrao Patil did not attend the meeting and consequently, Kale skipped the session. Due to their absence, an official decision regarding her withdrawal could not be finalised.
Official Optimism
Speaking to reporters after the session, Mahajan maintained an optimistic front. “The resolution of Nashik rebellion has effectively cleared the path for Jalgaon as well. Patil is currently outside the city. He will arrive in Jalgaon on Saturday, following which Kale’s official withdrawal will be announced,” he said.
Mahajan also claimed that two independent candidates, along with Maha Vikas Aghadi representatives, were in contact with the alliance and might extend their support to the Mahayuti candidate.
Rebel’s Stance
Meanwhile, Kale released a video on social media asserting her stance. She declared, “I am contesting the election for the women and intend to fight until the last moment. Though I will ultimately take directions from the party leadership.”
