Maharashtra Government Nears Historic Farm Loan Waiver Decision
In a significant development for Maharashtra's agricultural sector, State Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne has confirmed that a positive decision on the long-awaited farm loan waiver is expected before the June 30 deadline. Speaking exclusively to TOI on Saturday, Bharne revealed that the government's dedicated war room is currently in the final phase of data scrutiny, paving the way for a crucial announcement that could impact millions of farmers across the state.
Pravin Pardeshi Committee Report Forms the Foundation
The government had earlier appointed a high-level committee headed by retired IAS officer and economic adviser Pravin Pardeshi to conduct a comprehensive assessment of farm loan statuses throughout Maharashtra. "The committee was instructed to submit its report before the first week of April. This report is crucial as the government's decision on the loan waiver will be based entirely on its findings," Minister Bharne emphasized during the interview.
With less than six weeks remaining for the committee to finalize and submit its detailed report, the state administration has activated a specialized war room to accelerate the examination of massive data collected from financial institutions across Maharashtra. A senior cooperation department official explained, "All banks and financial institutions were mandated to provide detailed reports on farm loan status. The data encompasses both short-term and long-term pending farm loans, creating an extensive dataset. The war room has been specifically established to scrutinize this information meticulously, which will ultimately form the foundation of the committee's final recommendations."
Agitation and Government Assurance
The renewed push for a comprehensive farm loan waiver gained substantial momentum following a large-scale agitation led by former MLA and Prahar Janshakti Party founder Bachchu Kadu in October of last year. The protests, which highlighted the financial distress of farmers, prompted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to meet with Kadu and other prominent farmer leaders in Mumbai. During this crucial meeting, the Chief Minister provided a firm assurance that a definitive decision on the loan waiver would be announced before June 30 this year, leading to the temporary suspension of the agitation.
Minister Bharne reiterated the government's unwavering commitment, stating, "The government is fully committed to granting a farm loan waiver, and the decision will be officially announced before the deadline. The committee is currently working through certain technical aspects to ensure accuracy and fairness, but I can assure you that the final decision will be historic and transformative for our farming community."
