Maharashtra Civic Polls: BJP Dominates, Congress Solo

Maharashtra Civic Body Elections Deliver Decisive Results

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, the Shiv Sena led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, delivered a powerful performance in the Maharashtra civic body elections. Held after a nine-year gap, the polls concluded on Friday with the Mahayuti alliance nearly achieving a clean sweep. The Congress party chose to contest alone, while two rival NCP factions temporarily merged for the elections. Voters across the state turned out in significant numbers to cast their ballots.

Mahayuti Crosses Majority Mark in Mumbai

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance quickly crossed the halfway mark in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Early trends showed the alliance leading in 119 seats as counting progressed. According to declared results for 121 wards, the BJP secured 47 wards. Shiv Sena won 14 wards, and Shiv Sena (UBT) captured 30 wards. These numbers indicate a strong mandate for the ruling coalition in India's financial capital.

Saffron Surge Across Western Maharashtra

The BJP dismissed allegations of vote theft and overcame disputes about indelible ink to surge ahead of main rivals. The Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS, and NCP (SP) trailed significantly. In Pune, long considered a Pawar family bastion, the BJP outperformed the combined NCP and NCP (SP) factions. Sharad Pawar and his nephew Ajit Pawar closed ranks to defend their turf but could not stop the BJP's advance. The saffron party also gained ground in civic bodies across western Maharashtra, including Kolhapur, Satara, Solapur, and Sangli.

Former Mayors and Deputy Mayors Secure Wins

Several familiar faces emerged victorious in the BMC elections. Four former mayors won their respective wards:

  • Kishori Pednekar from Ward 192
  • Shraddha Jadhav from Ward 202
  • Vishakha Raut from Ward 191
  • Milind Vaidya from Ward 182

All four belong to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT). Three former deputy mayors also won:

  • Suhas Wadkar from Ward 41
  • Hemangi Waralikar from Ward 193
  • Alka Kerkar from Ward 98

Wadkar and Waralikar represent the Uddhav Thackeray faction, while Kerkar belongs to the BJP.

Congress' Solo Performance Falls Short in Mumbai

The Congress party contested the local body elections independently, failing to make a significant impact in Mumbai. However, its overall performance across Maharashtra's civic polls surpassed both Thackeray cousins' alliance and the rival Pawar factions. The party fielded candidates in just 528 of the 2,869 seats but secured 226 seats across various civic bodies. This marked the Congress' first solo outing in local elections since 1999, driven by shifting alliances and questions about political legacy.

Notable Defeats in BMC Elections

The BMC elections witnessed some prominent losses. Big names like Ravi Raja of the BJP and Samadhan Sarvankar of the Shiv Sena faced defeat. These results highlight the competitive nature of Mumbai's political landscape and the voters' decisive choices.

The Maharashtra civic body elections have reshaped local governance dynamics. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance's strong showing signals continued political dominance, while the Congress' solo experiment yields mixed results. Former mayors returning to power add experience to the civic bodies, promising focused development work in the coming years.
