Maharashtra Auto Union Welcomes Permit Ban, Demands Equal Rules for E-Rickshaws

The Auto Rickshaw Drivers and Owners Association Joint Action Committee has expressed support for Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik's announcement to halt the issuance of new permits for auto-rickshaws across the state. In a statement released on Monday, the association described the government's move as a positive step, provided it is genuinely aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in urban areas.

Association Questions Exclusion of Electric Variants

However, the association raised critical questions regarding the policy's scope. It pointed out that similar restrictions are not being considered for e-auto rickshaws and e-rickshaws, despite their growing presence on roads. The association referenced Sarnaik's remarks linking the increasing number of auto-rickshaws to traffic issues in several cities, arguing that if conventional autos are blamed for congestion, electric variants would equally contribute to the problem.

Vilas Bhalekar, the association's general secretary, emphasized that targeting only conventional auto-rickshaws would be unjust to thousands of drivers who rely on these vehicles for their livelihood. He stated, "Restricting only conventional auto-rickshaws amounts to discrimination against hardworking drivers. If the goal is to control traffic, all types must be regulated uniformly."

Call for Uniform Policy and Threat of Protests

The association has urged the state government to reconsider its stance and implement identical restrictions on e-auto rickshaws and e-rickshaws to ensure fairness and effectiveness in managing traffic congestion. Bhalekar issued a stern warning, indicating that if the government fails to adopt a uniform decision covering all auto-rickshaw types, the association will organize widespread protests across Maharashtra.

Additionally, the association stressed the importance of stakeholder consultation before policy implementation. It argued that any unilateral decision could severely impact the livelihoods of a large number of auto-rickshaw drivers statewide, highlighting the need for inclusive discussions with transport department officials.
