LDF Unveils Comprehensive 60-Point Manifesto for Kerala Assembly Elections

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has officially presented its manifesto for the forthcoming Kerala assembly polls, outlining an ambitious 60-point program with approximately 950 detailed proposals aimed at realizing its vision for a New Kerala. The comprehensive document was unveiled by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Kozhikode, setting forth transformative goals for the next five years.

Core Welfare and Poverty Eradication Initiatives

At the heart of the manifesto lies a commitment to eradicate absolute poverty across Kerala. The LDF has pledged a significant welfare push, promising to increase the monthly pension to Rs 3,000 for eligible beneficiaries. Furthermore, the manifesto outlines specific measures to generate enhanced job opportunities for women and youth, recognizing their crucial role in the state's development.

Key employment promises include:

  • Jobs for 50% of women in the employable age bracket through the Kudumbashree and Local Self Government Institution (LSGI) initiatives.
  • A 'People's Plan for Nava Kerala' campaign targeting employment for 20 lakh housewives.
  • Interest-free loans for young entrepreneurs to foster startup culture and self-employment.
  • Assured jobs for students completing their education in Kerala via campus placements, complemented by a 'back to campus' scheme for skill enhancement.

The manifesto also announces the launch of Life Mission 2.0, an ambitious project designed to provide houses to all remaining homeless individuals in Kerala, with the goal of making it India's first 'no-homeless state'. In a significant financial commitment, linkage loans through Kudumbashree will be doubled from Rs 10,000 crore to Rs 20,000 crore to support these initiatives.

Revolutionary Healthcare and Infrastructure Proposals

In the healthcare sector, the LDF has proposed a groundbreaking universal health insurance scheme. This plan would extend coverage beyond the current Rs 5 lakh limit under the Karunya Health Insurance Scheme to offer unlimited coverage. Additionally, a special health insurance scheme will be introduced to include those currently excluded from Karunya, Medisep, and other existing insurance programs.

Addressing perceived discrimination from the central government, the manifesto criticizes the denial of an AIIMS institution to Kerala and proposes establishing an international hospital and research center that would surpass AIIMS in capabilities. Other health commitments include a healthy old age proposal and a comprehensive care scheme for bedridden patients.

On the infrastructure front, the LDF promises Metro projects in Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram, alongside the implementation of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). The Sabarimala master plan is slated for completion within five years, accompanied by the Clean Pamba initiative to enhance environmental sustainability at the pilgrimage site.

Economic Growth and Agricultural Support

To boost economic development, the manifesto sets a target to increase the manufacturing sector's contribution from 13% to 16% by 2031. This will be achieved through:

  1. Establishing an industrial corridor and developing industrial cities.
  2. Investing Rs 2 lakh crore over the next five years in industrial infrastructure.
  3. Transforming one lakh nano and micro enterprises to achieve a turnover of Rs 1 crore each.
  4. Enabling 1,000 small enterprises to reach sales of Rs 100 crore.

In agriculture, the LDF has committed to increasing Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for key crops: rubber to Rs 300, paddy to Rs 35, and coconut to Rs 45, aiming to improve farmer livelihoods and agricultural sustainability.

Political Commentary and Broader Vision

During the media address following the manifesto release, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed concerns about the proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA). He suggested a hidden agenda behind the bill, alleging that the BJP is implementing RSS objectives through its provisions. Vijayan criticized specific measures, including the potential takeover of institutions for lapses in account submissions to authorities, labeling them as draconian.

The overarching theme of the manifesto is the transformation of Kerala into a knowledge society over the next five years, positioning the state as a model of progressive governance and inclusive development through its extensive 950-proposal framework.
