LDF Expresses Confidence in Securing Fresh Mandate Based on Governance Record
In the lead-up to the Kerala assembly elections, leaders of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) have projected strong confidence in their prospects, citing what they describe as an outstanding performance by their government. They emphasize that no other government in India can match LDF's comprehensive delivery across social and economic sectors, from supporting weaker sections to accelerating infrastructure development and attracting investments.
Secular Stance and Political Alliances
Addressing questions about alliances, LDF representatives clarified their firm opposition to all forms of communalism and extremism, stating there is no room for compromise on this principle. They contrasted this with rival fronts, accusing them of making dangerous compromises that threaten the social fabric. While not explicitly rejecting support from groups like the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), LDF welcomes votes from anyone who acknowledges their uncompromising secular-democratic stand, viewing such support as validation of their commitment to secular values.
They pointed out that the United Democratic Front (UDF) has been seen negotiating with SDPI for support in several seats, including Manjeshwaram, without serious objections raised. LDF positions itself as strengthening Kerala's social capital, making the state an oasis of hope for secular forces.
Internal Party Dynamics and Candidate Selection
Regarding internal challenges, such as former CPM leaders like G Sudhakaran contesting as UDF-backed independents, LDF downplayed the significance, noting that these individuals were not holding key organizational positions. They acknowledged making sincere efforts to involve them in party activities, but some chose to pursue personal ambitions by aligning with rivals, a move they believe the people of Kerala will decisively reject.
On candidate selection, LDF denied any sudden shift, explaining that they assess candidates based on ground realities, local feedback, and a balanced approach. While encouraging those who have completed two terms to make way for fresh faces, they also evaluate constituency-specific needs, sitting MLAs' performance, and the political situation, maintaining this pragmatic strategy for the current election.
Women's Representation and Rival Accusations
In response to Rahul Gandhi's comment about a woman Chief Minister for Kerala being his dream, LDF emphasized that empowering women and ensuring their meaningful representation has always been a priority, not merely a token gesture. They criticized tokenism, citing that even a woman Prime Minister in the past did not fundamentally transform women's conditions, and acknowledged that more progress is needed in this area.
Regarding accusations between LDF and UDF about BJP links, LDF leaders criticized Rahul Gandhi for launching what they called an unwarranted tirade against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, describing it as unbecoming. They suggested that such rhetoric could weaken the India bloc, of which Congress and CPM are constituents, but placed blame on Gandhi for the discord.
Welfare Promises and BJP's Prospects
On welfare promises, such as raising pensions to Rs 3,000, LDF dismissed UDF's assurances as hollow, recalling that ten years ago, UDF left office with 18 months of social welfare pensions in arrears. They expressed confidence that voters view such promises with deep suspicion based on past experiences.
Assessing the BJP and NDA's chances, LDF stated they are not a significant force in Kerala, attributing their efforts to desperate attempts using money, media, and institutional influence. They believe the divisive ideology of hate will be countered by the strong social capital built by the Left over decades.
Strengthening Mass Base and Election Outlook
LDF highlighted the entry of Kerala Congress (M) into their fold before the 2021 assembly elections as strengthening their mass base, demonstrating that parties committed to agricultural communities find no real space within UDF. They firmly rejected the premise of losing the election, expressing unwavering confidence in victory based on their governance model, which has earned praise from international agencies and achieved milestones like eradicating extreme poverty.
