Union Minister and former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy took centre stage at the three-day Krishi Mela held at VC Farm in Mandya, making significant announcements for the agricultural community and addressing a recent political controversy. The event saw the launch of a new agricultural publication and substantial financial support for a long-neglected educational institution.
Focus on Farmers and Agricultural Development
During the mela, Kumaraswamy formally released Hasiru Siri, a special publication dedicated to agriculture, and honoured progressive farmers from the districts of Hassan and Chamarajanagar. Addressing the gathering in the presence of Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji of the Adichunchanagiri Math, he declared the fair a major success with its message resonating in every village.
He highlighted the Central government's allocation of Rs 1.3 crore to the agriculture sector and criticised the current state government for its alleged neglect in maize procurement. Drawing a contrast, he recalled his own tenure as chief minister, stating that farmers never had to protest over crop purchases during that period.
To empower farmers directly, Kumaraswamy proposed concrete measures. He urged the state government to establish godowns and cold storage units in every gram panchayat. Furthermore, he suggested providing cultivators with a 75% advance on their produce to reduce their dependency on middlemen and ensure better financial security.
Commitment to Mandya's Growth and a Public Apology
Reiterating his deep connection to Mandya, Kumaraswamy asserted that the district's development remains a priority. He mentioned his efforts to bring at least one major industry to the area and revealed that he is examining possibilities to revive the Bhadravathi factory, signalling a focus on industrial rejuvenation alongside agricultural support.
In a notable moment, the Union Minister publicly apologised to Sri Nirmalanandanatha Swamiji. This followed a political controversy stemming from the seer's recent remarks. Kumaraswamy clarified that his earlier comments were intended only as advice that revered seers should steer clear of political platforms. Acknowledging the historic ties between his family and the math, he offered a sincere apology if his words had caused any hurt.
Substantial Aid for Mysugar School
Moving to the education sector, Kumaraswamy reaffirmed his commitment to the Mysugar School, which has faced prolonged neglect. Demonstrating his promise, he handed over a cheque for Rs 19.9 lakh as the first instalment of the financial assistance he had pledged.
He praised the school's teachers for their remarkable dedication, having worked without salaries for 15 months amidst severe hardship. Kumaraswamy vowed his continued support and called upon the state government to ensure the school's survival and its eventual upgrade to a college. Expressing his vision, he said he hoped the Mysugar School would grow into the finest educational institution in Mandya.
