Belagavi: Activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) staged a protest in Belagavi on Thursday, demanding that permission be denied to Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) for its proposed Maha Morcha on June 22. The protesters submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and city police commissioner, opposing the march, arguing that it could disturb communal harmony and undermine Kannada interests in the region.
Allegations and Warnings
KRV district president Deepak Gudaganatti alleged that the MES Yuva Samiti was misleading Marathi-speaking people. He warned that if permission was granted, it could lead to a law-and-order issue. Gudaganatti demanded a ban on MES and Shiv Sena, and called for preventive arrests of leaders planning the protest. He further stated that if permission was granted, KRV would hold a Kannada Swabhimani rally on June 22.
Government Response
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan said that MES leaders were asked to submit details of the proposed march but did not respond. He added that efforts were underway to bring Kannada and Marathi-speaking leaders together for talks, and the matter would be examined thoroughly. Officials reiterated the need to maintain peace in the region.
