Residents in Kolkata's New Town Action Area I should prepare for lower water pressure over the next few days. The issue stems from recent repair work on a major water supply pipeline.
Pipeline Repair Work Nears Completion
Officials from the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) confirmed the situation. They stated that repair work on a 600mm diameter water pipeline is now complete. Workers successfully plugged a leak in the system.
Concrete Needs Time to Set
However, the freshly repaired section requires time for the concrete to properly settle and cure. This process typically takes two to three days. Until the material fully hardens, the pipeline cannot handle its standard operating pressure.
As a precaution, authorities are running only two water pumps instead of the usual three. This operational change directly leads to the reduced water pressure affecting Action Area I.
Residents Report Practical Difficulties
The lower pressure is causing real problems for local households. Many residents report that their underground water tanks are remaining empty. This shortage disrupts daily routines and essential water needs.
To cope, numerous families are turning to private water tankers. They are hiring these services to meet cooking, cleaning, and drinking requirements until normal supply returns.
Official Advisory for Conservation
The NKDA has issued a clear request to all residents. They urge people to conserve water whenever possible for the next couple of days.
Specifically, officials ask households to avoid using filtered municipal water for non-essential tasks. This includes washing cars and other vehicles. Minimizing such usage will help manage the limited supply more effectively.
Normal Service Expected Soon
The good news is that full restoration is on the horizon. Authorities anticipate that normal water pressure will resume by Sunday evening.
Once the concrete work has fully settled, all three pumps can be safely reactivated. This will restore the system to its standard capacity and pressure levels for Action Area I.
