In a significant development, Kolhapur MP Shahu Chhatrapati, alongside representatives from the Shahu Mill Workers' Union and various social activists, met with District Collector Amol Yedge on Monday. The delegation presented a written statement demanding immediate steps by the state government to revive the historic Shahu Mill, which has been non-operational for over two decades.

Established by the visionary Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj in 1906, the Shahu Mill originally spanned 27 acres and served as a pioneering institution for economic empowerment across all castes and communities during the pre-independence era. The mill was transferred to the textiles department in 1967 but faced closure in 2003. Since its shutdown, activists and community leaders have consistently advocated for its revival and the construction of a memorial honoring Shahu Maharaj's legacy.
Despite a 2013 approval by then Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan for an international memorial project, tangible progress has remained elusive, with the site languishing in neglect for years. The mill's historical importance is underscored by its role as a workplace open to people of all castes and religions, embodying Shahu Maharaj's progressive ideology.

During the meeting at the district collectorate office, social activist Vijay Devane emphasized that the Ministry of Textiles should formally demand the mill's revival to preserve this heritage asset.
