Kolhapur MLA Conducts Inspection of Flood-Prone Areas, Issues Strict Instructions

In response to recent unseasonal rainfall, MLA Rajesh Kshirsagar, who heads the state planning commission, conducted a thorough inspection of the Jayanti nullah and other flood-prone areas within Kolhapur city on Thursday. The primary objective of this visit was to assess and ensure effective water drainage systems are in place to mitigate potential flooding risks.

Immediate Action Plan Demanded from Municipal Corporation

During the inspection, Kshirsagar issued direct instructions to officials from the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC). He mandated that they submit a comprehensive action plan within two days, detailing steps for the cleaning of both nullahs and drainage ducts across the city. This urgent directive comes as clogged drainage systems have already led to significant waterlogging on roads during the recent rains.

"The clogged drainage ducts have caused severe waterlogging on roads during the unseasonal rain over the past two days," stated Kshirsagar. "Therefore, as a matter of priority, these drainage ducts must be cleaned in coordination with all relevant agencies."

Accountability and Preparedness Emphasized

Kshirsagar issued a stern warning, holding ward officers and health department officials personally responsible for any negligence in the drain-cleaning operations. He emphasized the need for transparency and efficiency in the execution of these tasks.

"All necessary machinery required for desilting the drains must be kept in a state of readiness," he added. "Transparency in the work should be maintained, and KMC officials should ensure completing 100% of the drain cleaning before the onset of the monsoon. This is crucial to prevent water accumulation in low-lying areas and stagnation on roads during the upcoming monsoon season or any future unseasonal rainfall."

Key Officials Present During Inspection

The inspection was attended by several key figures, including:

  • KMC Deputy Commissioner Paritosh Kankal
  • Deputy City Engineer Gujar
  • Chief Health Inspector Jaywant Powar
  • Shiv Sena Deputy District Chief Tukaram Salokhe
  • Corporator Ashpak Ajrekar

Their presence underscored the collaborative effort required to address the city's drainage challenges and implement the proposed measures effectively.
