Kochi Corporation Budget Approval Delayed Amid Allegations of Financial Data Leak
The Kochi Corporation council convened on Thursday for a detailed discussion of the municipal budget, but the session quickly turned contentious. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) councillors formally withheld their approval of the budget, insisting on a written explanation from the corporation secretary regarding allegations that key financial details were leaked to the media before the official presentation in the council.
LDF Demands Accountability for Alleged Budget Leak
Earlier, the LDF had petitioned to defer the budget, claiming that agenda notes and critical financial figures were disclosed in advance, undermining the council's procedural integrity. During the heated discussion, LDF parliamentary party leader V A Sreejith made serious allegations against Mayor V K Minimol. He asserted that the mayor prevented Secretary P S Shibu from responding to the complaint when the budget was initially tabled.
Sreejith emphasized that a simple acknowledgement of this lapse could have avoided further controversy, accusing the mayor of disregarding established council procedures. He argued that such transparency issues erode public trust in municipal governance.
Criticism of Budget Content and Policy Directions
Beyond the leak allegations, Sreejith launched a broader critique of the budget itself. He termed it unrealistic, alleging that it failed to adequately address pressing local issues such as drinking water shortages, tidal flooding in low-lying areas, and the welfare of municipal workers. Furthermore, he accused the ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) of aggressively pushing privatization initiatives under the public-private partnership model, which he claimed could compromise public services.
UDF and BJP Responses in the Council Debate
In defense, UDF members countered the allegations, firmly stating that the budget was not leaked and should be recognized as a people-centric budget focused on development. Congress councillor Deepthy Mary Varghese strongly defended the budget, describing it as forward-looking and designed to propel Kochi's urban infrastructure and social welfare programs forward.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Sudha Dileepkumar introduced another dimension to the criticism. She focused on the corporation's financial strategies, criticizing its reliance on municipal bonds for funding. Dileepkumar called for more robust measures, including stronger tax collection mechanisms and improved traffic management systems, to ensure sustainable municipal finance without over-dependence on debt instruments.
