Congress President Kharge Accuses BJP of Neglecting Barak Valley in Assam

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sharp critique against the BJP-led government on Monday, asserting that Barak Valley in Assam has endured what he termed 'step-motherly treatment' over the past decade. He claimed the region has transformed from an 'island of peace' into an 'island of neglect', highlighting significant local issues during his campaign efforts.

Campaign Focus on Infrastructure and Flood Woes

While campaigning across Barak Valley, which encompasses 13 assembly constituencies, Kharge addressed rallies at Borkhola in Cachar and Cheragi in South Karimganj. He emphasized local infrastructure problems and flood-related distress, aiming to position these concerns at the forefront of the political discourse. Recalling former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's characterization of the area, Kharge noted that Barak Valley, once renowned for its tea gardens and tranquility, is now struggling with neglect and deteriorating civic systems.

"For 10 years, the people of Barak Valley have been ignored and sidelined. What was once called the 'island of peace' is today grappling with basic infrastructure," Kharge stated during his speeches.

Key Projects Highlight Administrative Failures

Kharge pointed to specific projects as evidence of what he called 'administrative paralysis'. He cited the incomplete Silchar flyover and the sluggish progress of the Tarapur elevator corridor, describing them as symbols of governmental inefficiency. "These are not just delayed projects; they represent daily hardships. A student traveling to school, a laborer heading to work, or a patient in an ambulance—everyone is suffering due to these failures," he explained.

Flood Crisis and Government Inaction

Addressing the recurring flood issues, the Congress leader accused the government of failing to deliver a 'permanent solution' to the annual crisis. He detailed how homes are destroyed, crops ruined, and urban areas like Silchar face chronic waterlogging because of inadequate drainage systems. "People are forced to endure unbearable traffic jams on submerged roads. Despite tall claims, nothing has changed on the ground," Kharge asserted, underscoring the ongoing challenges faced by residents.

Criticism of PM Modi and Unfulfilled Promises

Kharge also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of 'selective memory loss' regarding key commitments made to Assam. He referenced the alleged failure to fully implement provisions of the Assam Accord, the unfulfilled promise of a flood-free state, and pending demands for Scheduled Tribe status for certain communities. "Modi ji has forgotten every promise made to the common people. The only thing he remembers is handing over assets like the Guwahati airport to corporate houses," Kharge remarked, taking a swipe at the Centre's privatisation policies.

This campaign rhetoric underscores the Congress party's strategy to leverage local grievances against the ruling BJP in Assam, as political tensions escalate in the region.
