Kerala Chief Minister Inaugurates Perumbalam Bridge, Highlights LDF Government's Determination

In a significant event on Saturday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the newly constructed Perumbalam bridge, which links Perumbalam island with the mainland. Speaking at the ceremony, Vijayan emphasized that the bridge is more than just a development project; it symbolizes the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government's unwavering determination and commitment to progress.

A Long-Standing Dream Fulfilled for Local Residents

Vijayan noted that this moment marks the fulfillment of a long-standing dream for the local residents of Perumbalam. He rhetorically asked, "Did you ever think before 2016 that the Perumbalam bridge would become a reality?" The Chief Minister attributed the project's success to the LDF government coming to power in 2016, stating that it was this administration's unique approach that made the bridge a reality.

He elaborated, "We are moving forward on the right path. On one side, the development of the state, and on the other, the welfare of the people, is what we aim to enhance. We are aiming for a new Kerala." Vijayan also referenced the national highway developments in Kerala, mentioning that in 2016, many doubted its feasibility, but now, with rapid completion underway, sections are set to be dedicated to the nation by the Prime Minister, as informed by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Bridge Specifications and Construction Details

The Perumbalam bridge was constructed at a cost of Rs 100 crore, with funding included in the 2016-17 state budget and financial assistance from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) division of the Public Works Department (PWD) was responsible for the construction.

Key features of the bridge include:

  • A total length of 1,155.40 metres, comprising 27 spans of 35 metres each.
  • Three bowstring arch spans of 55 metres each to ensure unobstructed water traffic in Vembanad Lake.
  • A width of 11 metres, with 1.5-metre-wide walkways on both sides for pedestrians.
  • Design elements that offer scenic views of Vembanad Lake, enhancing its appeal.

The bridge connects the Arookutty panchayat and Perumbalam island in the Aroor constituency of Alappuzha district. It is expected to open new opportunities for Perumbalam, particularly in the tourism sector, leveraging its potential as a scenic destination.

Event Highlights and Government's Broader Vision

The inauguration event was presided over by PWD and Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas, with Daleema Jojo MLA welcoming the gathering. KRFB Project Director M Ashok Kumar presented a detailed report on the project's execution and outcomes.

Vijayan's speech underscored the LDF government's dual focus on infrastructure development and public welfare, positioning the Perumbalam bridge as a testament to their governance model. This project is part of a broader initiative to transform Kerala's landscape and boost economic growth through improved connectivity and tourism infrastructure.
