Kerala Cabinet Approves Land for Memorial Institutes in Thiruvananthapuram and Thalassery
The Kerala state cabinet has made a significant decision to allocate land for two memorial institutes. These institutes will honor the legacies of former ministers K M Mani and Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. The cabinet approved the allotment during a recent meeting.
Land Allotment for K M Mani Memorial Institute
In Thiruvananthapuram, the cabinet has allotted 25 cents of land for the K M Mani Memorial Institute for Social Transformation. This land is located in Vellayambalam, within the state capital. It belongs to the Kerala Water Authority.
The government will lease this land to the KM Mani Foundation for a period of 30 years. The lease comes with strict conditions. The land must be used exclusively for the memorial institute. It cannot be subleased or rented out to any other party.
This decision follows earlier efforts to establish a memorial for K M Mani. In the 2020-21 budget, then finance minister Thomas Isaac announced an allocation of Rs 5 crore for this purpose. The allocation recognized Mani's contributions to the state. Authorities have been searching for a suitable location in Thiruvananthapuram, where Mani worked extensively.
Land Allotment for Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Memorial Centre
In Thalassery, the cabinet has allotted land for the Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Memorial Study and Research Centre. This centre will be located in Vadikkakam, Thalassery. The required land measures 1.139 acres.
The Kodiyeri Balakrishnan Memorial Academy of Social Sciences will receive this land on a 30-year lease. The annual lease rent is set at a nominal rate of Rs 100. This arrangement aims to support the establishment of the study and research centre.
Both decisions reflect the government's commitment to preserving the memories of these political figures. The institutes are expected to contribute to social transformation and academic research in Kerala.
