KDMC Elections: 52.11% Turnout in Multi-Alliance Contest

High-Stakes Battle Unfolds in Kalyan-Dombivli Civic Elections

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation elections are witnessing an intense political showdown. Multiple alliances are competing fiercely across the civic body limits in Maharashtra's Thane district. The BJP and Shiv Sena are contesting together as Mahayuti allies in most wards. They face strong opposition from the Shiv Sena (UBT)-MNS alliance and the Congress-NCP (SP) front. The NCP led by Ajit Pawar is also participating in this crucial electoral battle.

Voter Turnout Shows Modest Improvement

Voter turnout in Kalyan-Dombivli reached 52.11% according to preliminary estimates. This marks an increase of approximately three percentage points compared to the 2015 civic polls. The voting percentage remained relatively low during early afternoon hours. However, participation picked up significantly later in the day as more citizens exercised their democratic right.

Several other Mumbai Metropolitan Region corporations recorded slightly higher voter turnout. Vasai-Virar and Kalyan-Dombivli both showed improved participation compared to previous civic elections. In contrast, Bhiwandi and Ulhasnagar appeared to register a dip in voter turnout according to Thursday night estimates.

Administrative Measures Ensure Smooth Polling

The civic administration implemented several measures to facilitate voting. To ease congestion and reduce long queues, officials set up polling booths in unconventional locations. Schools served as traditional voting centers while housing complex car parks also hosted polling stations. This innovative approach helped manage voter flow more effectively throughout election day.

Polling in KDMC proceeded largely peacefully across most areas. Authorities conducted voting for 122 seats without major disruptions. The electoral process maintained its integrity despite the complex political landscape and multiple competing alliances.

Security Concerns and Voter Confusion

In Panel No. 29 of KDMC, additional police deployment became necessary. This followed clashes between BJP and Shiv Sena workers in the days leading up to polling. Police took preventive measures by turning back vehicles allegedly arriving from Badlapur. These actions aimed to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incidents during the sensitive electoral period.

Some voters experienced confusion due to the implementation of the four-member panel system. At several polling stations, citizens hesitated when they did not hear the confirmation "beep" after pressing buttons on electronic voting machines. Poll officials promptly stepped in to provide guidance and clarification.

Election staff explained that voters needed to cast separate votes for each of the four candidates. These candidates appeared on different EVMs under the panel system. This clarification helped voters understand the modified voting procedure and complete their electoral participation confidently.

The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation elections represent a significant democratic exercise in Maharashtra's political calendar. With multiple alliances competing and voter turnout showing improvement, these elections will shape local governance in the region for years to come.
