The assembly election in Kalpetta is unfolding under the long shadow of the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslide that claimed 298 lives and nearly wiped out entire villages twenty months ago. What was initially framed as a testament to Kerala's unity and resilience has transformed into a bitter political issue dominating the current poll campaign. Political Contestants and Campaign Landscape
Congress MLA T Siddique is contesting to retain his seat against RJD's PK Anil Kumar and BJP district president Prashanth Malavayal. The road leading to the under-construction rehabilitation township is lined with towering billboards featuring Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, boldly captioned: 'Who else but LDF can honour the word given to landslide survivors.' This visual propaganda sets the tone for a highly charged electoral environment.
On March 1, just ahead of the elections, authorities inaugurated 178 houses under Phase I of the rehabilitation project. However, the site still resembles an active construction zone with unfinished roads, incomplete power lines, and ongoing sewage works. The gap between political announcements and ground reality has become a defining feature of this election.
Survivors' Plight and Unfinished Rehabilitation
For survivors like Mariyama and Madaswamy, aged 71, who are currently living in temporary quarters at Munderi, the wait for proper housing continues. During their third visit to the inaugurated site since the ceremony, they discovered electrical and plumbing work remained incomplete. "We have the plot and house documents," Madaswamy explained with visible frustration. "We just want to move in before the monsoon rains arrive."
Rehabilitation projects announced by various political entities including Congress and IUML have become both symbols of hope and points of intense conflict. The Left Democratic Front presents the inaugurated houses as proof of their commitment and delivery, while simultaneously attacking Congress for failing to begin their own housing project. The United Democratic Front counters by calling the LDF initiative hurried optics, pointing to the incomplete infrastructure and numerous exclusions from the official beneficiary list.
Divergent Perspectives from the Ground
Shaijal Kaippa, a Thurki resident and RJD sympathizer, supports the LDF narrative regarding rehabilitation efforts. "Keeping this promise could be decisive in this election," Kaippa stated. "Congress has not even begun their housing project. Their biggest blunder was launching a separate scheme that hasn't started—they should have simply contributed the money to the government's existing fund."
Others view the situation through a different lens. K Vasu, a lottery seller who relocated his business to the township site where hundreds of people arrive daily, offers a pragmatic perspective. "People come in large numbers to see the progress, but what is the point of an inauguration ceremony if families cannot actually move into their homes?" Vasu questioned, adding that Siddique had led rescue efforts when the disaster initially struck.
Exclusion and Electoral History
Mundakkai native Muthan and his wife Jayanna, currently staying in temporary accommodation at Karapuzha, find themselves excluded from the rehabilitation list entirely. "My wife worked at the Harrisons Malayalam estate and our paddy fields were completely damaged," Muthan explained. "She cannot travel thirty-five kilometers to work anymore. Many others, including families from Padavettikunnu, face the same exclusion from the official lists."
Traditionally, Kalpetta has leaned toward the United Democratic Front. Siddique held the seat in 2021 with a margin exceeding four thousand votes despite a statewide LDF wave. Recent local body election results reinforce this electoral edge—while LDF captured the Kalpetta municipality along with Muttil and Muppainad panchayats, UDF secured victory in eight of the ten panchayats. Of the 173 grama panchayat wards, UDF including independents won 107, LDF captured 61, and NDA managed just three.
Campaign Strategies and Political Narratives
The United Democratic Front's campaign focuses heavily on Siddique's record, particularly his response during the landslide tragedy. Campaign material prominently features MP Priyanka Gandhi alongside the incumbent MLA. UDF also highlights pressing local issues including poor infrastructure at the Wayanad medical college, travel hardships along ghat roads, and the rising frequency of man-animal conflicts in the region.
The Left Democratic Front counters with a strong governance narrative, emphasizing their rehabilitation steps while attacking Congress for delays in their promised housing project.
