J&K Parties Hail Railway Projects Halt to Save Apple Orchards

J&K Political Spectrum Unites in Support of Railway Projects Suspension

In a rare show of unity across political lines, parties in Jammu and Kashmir have expressed their approval of the recent announcement by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The minister revealed on Tuesday that three proposed railway projects in the region have been temporarily suspended due to significant opposition from the state government and local Members of Parliament.

Concerns Over Agricultural and Ecological Impact

The primary objection raised by stakeholders revolves around the potential damage that the proposed track alignments could inflict on the state's vital apple orchards. These orchards form the backbone of Kashmir's agrarian economy, supporting countless families and contributing substantially to the region's livelihood. The fragile ecology of the area was also cited as a major concern that necessitated this pause in development.

While Minister Vaishnaw confirmed that there had been demands for these three additional railway projects, he acknowledged that they are now on hold because of the objections presented. He did not disclose the specific names of the projects during his announcement.

Specific Projects Identified by Governing Party

However, the governing National Conference provided clarity by identifying the halted proposals. According to their statement, the affected projects include the Bijbehara-Pahalgam railway link and the Pulwama-Shopian railway project. This issue had been previously highlighted by various groups, including local farmers, legislators such as Anantnag-Poonch MP Mian Altaf, and leaders from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

Pahalgam legislator Altaf Kaloo and National Conference spokesman Tanvir Sadiq extended their gratitude to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and MP Mian Altaf for what they termed their timely and critical intervention in stopping the proposed railway tracks between Bijbehara-Pahalgam and Anantnag-Shopian.

This is a vital step towards protecting people's livelihoods, apple orchards and the fragile ecology of the region, Kaloo emphasized, underscoring the multifaceted importance of the decision.

Cross-Party Appreciation for the Decision

Peoples Democratic Party president and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the move, stating, The decision to put the Pahalgam and Shopian railway lines on hold brings much-needed relief to Kashmir's agrarian economy. She elaborated that these projects threatened to destroy scarce fertile land and could have pushed over a million rural families into uncertainty. Mufti further stressed that in any future planning, farmers and local communities must be actively involved to safeguard Kashmir's economy and social fabric.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) legislator M Y Tarigami also praised the railway minister's decision, noting that connectivity to areas like Pahalgam and Shopian already exists through road networks, with more roads being developed. Development is meaningless if it destroys livelihoods, he asserted, highlighting the principle that progress should not come at the cost of people's well-being.

Broader Implications for Development Planning

This development has sparked a broader conversation about balancing infrastructure growth with environmental and agricultural preservation in sensitive regions. The unanimous support from diverse political entities in J&K indicates a shared commitment to prioritizing local livelihoods and ecological sustainability over unchecked development.

The temporary halt allows for further assessment and potential realignment of projects to minimize adverse impacts, ensuring that future railway developments in Jammu and Kashmir are more inclusive and considerate of the region's unique agricultural and ecological landscape.
