Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar sharply criticized the Punjab Police on Tuesday. He questioned their request for additional time to reply to a Delhi assembly notice. The notice concerns an FIR registered over a doctored video of AAP leader and former Delhi chief minister Atishi.
Jakhar's Social Media Post Highlights Irony
Sunil Jakhar took to social media platform X to express his views. He posted a pointed message regarding the situation. "Isn't it ironic that Punjab Police is asking for 10 days to respond to the Delhi Assembly Speaker's notice," Jakhar wrote. He highlighted that the police had forensically examined the video of former CM Atishi within a single day.
Formal Requests for Extension and Assembly's Response
On Monday, several senior Punjab Police officers made separate requests. The Punjab Director General of Police, the Special DGP for State Cybercrime, and the Jalandhar Police Commissioner all sought an additional ten days. They stated they needed this time to "duly apprise" the Delhi assembly speaker on the matter "in the interests of justice."
In response, the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat acted swiftly. Citing directions from Speaker Vijender Gupta, the secretariat wrote back to the officers. They instructed that a reply must be submitted positively on or before January 15, 2026.
Jakhar's Written Statement Raises Further Questions
Beyond his social media post, Sunil Jakhar issued a formal written statement on Tuesday. He posed a direct question to the police force. "If an investigation can be completed in one day, why is so much time now needed to send a reply to the Delhi assembly?" Jakhar asked.
The senior BJP leader elaborated on his criticism. "The same Punjab Police which completed the forensic examination of the former Delhi CM Atishi's video in one day is now asking for 10 days' time," he stated. He contrasted this with the assembly speaker's notice, which sought a response within just 48 hours.
Contrast with Other Cases and Allegations of Inaction
Jakhar pointed to what he sees as a double standard in police action. He recalled that the BJP had continuously demanded an investigation into another objectionable video. This separate video allegedly involved a lookalike of the Chief Minister. According to Jakhar, the police maintained complete silence on that particular issue.
"Is there something fishy going on?" the Punjab BJP president questioned publicly. He pushed his inquiry further in his statement. "If the Punjab Police can examine a video related to the former CM of Delhi within one day, then why is a forensic investigation not being conducted into the objectionable video allegedly involving the chief minister?"
He also raised concerns about an audio clip. Jakhar questioned why there was no probe into an audio reportedly involving the Patiala Police. He suggested the audio reflected an intent to undermine democratic processes.
Background of Jakhar's Earlier Demand
This is not the first time Sunil Jakhar has raised this issue with the police. He had previously written a formal letter to the Punjab DGP. In that communication, he specifically demanded a forensic examination of the video involving the Chief Minister's face. The current statements and questions stem from that ongoing demand for transparency and timely action.
